Ubuntu 12.4 running Gnome and Cairo dock Open GL
I'm Proud of my Ubuntu... This is my desktop I Really think this would be Great if Ubuntu Had a version something like this that came like this with Cairo Dock and these Icons some of the icons I changes around in such a way I thought would make a long time windows users who would like to switch over Happy and less confused.. I tried a bunch of different Linux versions and set ups If you will all claiming they would be great for a long time windows user and personally I think they all sucked!! I’m a Very long time windows User Since 1995 who happen to Try Ubuntu 12.4 at a friends and I liked the programs but didn't like the desktop.. So through my rambling around with this OS for the past three months This is what I came up with that I feel would make a long time windows user happy..:) The first Icon opens Applications Menu Kinda Like clicking start on windows XP the second opens Home and shows places like documents downloads etc.. The third is a launcher I made inside is a folder with different quick launch icons to different important programs places or application I think are important On My OS.. You could put some if not all of these on the dock but I like this idea of stacking them to save space and having the first three icons do something similar to windows .. Remember not everyone knows where everything is on Ubuntu or how to use it out of the gate and having a gigantic side Dock like unity has with the search thing is confusing and ugly so this is a nice place to put shortcuts to find things again for the beginner.

How did you get that ubuntu icon with a menu on there? I want that plz. :guitar:

You can Put any Icon on Cairo Dock by right clicking the Icon and going to edit. The Icon your talking about I pretty sure I made that with Photo Shop on my other Box stuck it on my flash drive and then on here. To be honest I make a lot of em on windows and then bring um to my Ubuntu. When I look on Google for Ubuntu Icons there isn't a lot to choose from I think I but a background image on that black button by shrinking it down and pasting it over to the button in Photo shop. I'd like to make a bunch more and maybe post em online some place for people to use...

simple and clean. Modded Nautilus 3 with highly customized metacity, GTK3 and icon themes. Sticking pretty closely to the glory that was Nautilus Elementary circa 2011 as Gnome 2.3 was breathing it's dying breath and the catastrophe that was Unity was unleashed upon the Ubuntu desktop.
As a side note, am I the ONLY person that thinks Faenza icons are the dumbest, UGLIEST thing to happen to Linux since the Crystal icon set for KDE3?
What is up with the stupid box shaped icons? The ONLY thing Faenza got right was the monochromatic icons

Unity with the square side dock Icons is Ugly.. I like what you got there that info on the side look is cool looks like some kind of system info not sure how that works N00b-un-2 (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=652009) but really cool looking!!
I don't miss that top bar I love Ubuntu with Gnome and Cairo that doc is sweet it can control everything on 12.04 if it can't control it You can make a custom launcher with custom Icon that can...:) If Ubuntu wants to pull old windows users over they need to make a dock like that and concentrate on a clean looking easy to use desktop..

Are you for serious? It's conky! How is it that there is anyone using Linux that doesn't know what conky is?
here is where it all started for me with conky:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=281865&highlight=show+conky
and of course here:
http://conky.sourceforge.net/config_settings.html
Conky is an amazing, lightweight text based system monitor that is configured using a simple markup language somewhat similar to HTML. It will dang near make you breakfast if you tell it to. It is extensible using anything from simple bash scripts, to scripting languages like python, ruby, perl, up to high level languages like Java and C++
Although it is primarily text based, Conky gained graphic support several years ago.
You can think of Conky as the Linux equivalent of Rainmeter on Windows, only far more flexible and powerful.

Dull and boring but, suits my work flow perfectly.
Linux Mint 13 (MATE DE)
Greybird window theme
Faenza Icons (I think they're beautiful ;) )
Comix Cursor set
Modified Glass clock screenlet
Modified Clear Weather screenlet
Clear Calendar screenlet with (No Back theme)
Modified Watermark screenlets
I would love to be using Conky if I could get it to do/look the same as my screenlets.

Fun to build and use:
Xfce 4.8 on Debian Wheezy 7.0 (gnome 3.4.2 installed as well, hybridised DE). Using the Debian Squeeze net-installer as a base CLI only install, then updating to Wheezy and installing the DEs.
Style: MurrinaCrystalHuman
Icons: Dropline Neu!
Nautilus controls desktop. Compiz acts as the WM. Xfce4-panel (heavily customized set up ;)) and system daemons used with gnome services on etc.
Screenlets: 3 instances of the "Output" screenlet, make up the display on the screen right hand side.
Wallpaper: dragon.jpg
Tux's image is on both the, otherwise transparent, cube caps. Yosemite National park picture makes up the skydome background.

No sorry I don't know what conky is I just started using Ubuntu about 3 months ago.. I been using Windows for the past 18 years I like Ubuntu a lot but really don't like the desktop all that much so I did a lot of reading about tweaking things installing Gnome. using Cairo dock that kind of stuff changing things up a bit.. I'm not a pro on Linux by any means but not a novice computer user ether.. I was always good a tweaking windows, making windows Icon sets themes and things like that so I thought I’d try my hand at making something on Ubuntu .. Rainmeter oh Yah open source program it displays customizable skins, like memory and battery power, RSS feeds and weather forecasts mostly skins that are some what functional..
record your notes and to-do lists, launch your applications, and control media player - pretty clean non obstructive interfaces . I'll have to do some reading about Conky and how to implement that into some kind of them i build It looks really cool.. Thanks for the info N00b-un-2 (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=652009) I’ll do some reading on it..

Changed my desktop around drastically yesterday.
----------------------------------------------
DE: GNOME Shell.
Theme: GNOMish Dark(although it was still on Ambiance at the time of the snapshot).
Icon theme: GNOME, I think(although it was on the Unity icon theme at the time of the snapshot).
Extensions: Dash-in-Dock and Quicklists, and I added the extension that puts the Trash in the Panel, along with a Removable Device menu last night.
Wallpaper: http://dfx4509b.deviantart.com/art/PST-008-361120645
----------------------------------------------
And just a little tidbit, Ash Ketchum's just the alias I log into Ubuntu with, not my name.
----------------------------------------------
Reason for the switch to GS: a tad quicker than Unity on my hardware, along with being roomier for such apps as GIMP, Inkscape, Pinta, or Synfig, along with Chromium or Firefox, Launcher is a nice feature in Unity, but it tends to get in the way, especially on a 15" 4x3 LCD monitor, and this is coming from a guy who likes Unity. Also, with a few extensions, GS is about as easy to use as Unity, pretty much, but hey, can't knock Unity too hard as it's still in its infancy, pretty much. :)

This is my desktop using the conky script
1st screenshot has full desktop with banshee playing and 2nd screen shot has the application "drawers" running showing all my custom made icons for games that i can go back to different systems using a back button and all run from command line. I have set up a program called "easystroke Gesture Recognition" to use my middle mouse to show these menus when pressed
I like it :)

1.8GHz AMD Sempron 3400+, 1.5GiB RAM, 80GiB HDD. Archbang with the stock Conky config, and a slightly modified Tint2 config. And actually, Archbang runs great on my hardware.
As for browsers, I use Firefox Nightly as my main browser, but I have Google Chrome Dev for my secondary browser, and both browsers were pulled from AUR.
http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=246184&d=1378948290
Also, Manjaro, Fedora 20 Alpha, and Debian Sid virtual machines. Manjaro is the Openbox spin, and it was literally left with the stock config except for the slightly smaller terminal font, Fedora VM is the Xfce spin, and the panels and terminal font were shrunken down slightly, and then the Debian Sid VM is using LXDE, however I got rid of the Window List and replaced it with Cairo-Dock.
