I just threw every whois website at it I'm familiar with, it really is an actual MS website, they even use the correct the SSL certificate.

If this isn't a hoax why would they do this? Some kind of weird joke? Must be the worst marketing strategy I have ever seen.

cprofitt

Pretty simple the domain...

ofallevil.com is registered by ENOM, Inc.

http://www.enom.com/

The identity of who has really registered the domain is protected by whoisprivacyprotect.com or is them; I am not sure which.

the site http://thesource.ofallevil.com goes to the domain ofallevil and to the 'server' assigned to thesource. That seems to forward/redirect the request to Microsoft as all the images are actually hosted on real Microsoft servers.

The Netblock owner is Everyones Internet and the server at ofallevil is running Apache/2.0.59 (CentOS) on Linux.

Here's one more mystery. You can get service pack 3 from this site, but I can't find it on the production microsoft site. Did anybody else? Anyway, I installed it on a test client and it acts, so far, like a real service pack. Microsoft update recognized it.

Even if it really was their web site, I highly doubt if it would be suicide. Most people aren't swayed like that by a joke. The only people who would actually be moved by a joke like that are people who already hate Microsoft.

And even if it were a joke site created by MS, it's not like they are publicizing it, and using it to identify themselves.

Well I doubt that anyone's opinion would be effected by such a "joke" but that's not that point I was making. With marketing you're trying to create a positive image of your company for the customer. Everything you do publicly, ads as well as your website it itself, has to be positive to maintain or improve that image. No large companies, and certainly not as large as MS, would do any "jokes" like these. That's one of the most important rules of marketing when maintaining your image. No negative attention, period. If MS would use such an URL they would have to be 100% sure it had a positive effect for them (but in this case I do not see how this could be).

From what I can tell they have an excellent marketing department so I'm sure they'd never take a risk like that.

EDIT: A good example of using a negative ad for a positive effect was a commercial done by an ISP in my country some time ago. They basically said "our high speed i-net connections are worth....nothing, connection to the web via our services is nothing." You get the idea. That is a good way to use the word "nothing" as in that they cost very little. And they made it VERY clear their services are good. Just about the complete opposite of what MS would theoretically do by using such an URL

If you are a monopolistic company in a market what really do you have to lose, except for ******* off a few linux users to the mass of windows user? It's not advertised anywhere except for in this thread. I think its funny and give kudos to MS. I'm not an MS fanboy I'm just putting this in their perspective.
