For those who still read books, I recommend reading The Debian System (http://www.amazon.com/Debian-System-Concepts-Techniques/dp/1593270690). I've only read bits and pieces of it, but it'll give you a guide on how the whole Debian system works (and in turn, how Ubuntu works).

i always find the thing about books is they just can't keep up with changes, things just move so fast in linux.

i learned my debian from google and through trial & error.

True, all my knowledge was acquired through the almighty google and from hanging around here. However, nothings beats a quick reference and besides, books don't need batteries! :)

The book recommended by the OP is actually a very nice book. It really sheds light about a lot of things in Debian and why these things are done in a certain manner.

Searching the internet for information is a great tool. But this book will introduce you to topics you most probably would have not known anything about, so naturally you don't search for them in the internet. That is the advantage of the book.

Don't you know you can't grep dead trees?

Heh, I actually have about 2 feet (65cm) of my shelf in my dorm filled with computer books. I left a lot of them at home, actually. UNIX in a Nutshell is one that's sitting here on the shelf that I should get around to picking through a bit.
