It comes pre-installed with Xandros, but apparently Xubuntu fits right in there as well

I own one, and it's awesome. It came with a very heavily customized Xandros OS which is great. It's fast (boots up in 15-20 seconds) and contains many useful applications. I wanted to install Ubuntu on it because I like the selection of applications better. I used an external cd drive to install Ubuntu and then got a script from this site (http://ubuntu-eee.tuxfamily.org/index.php5?title=Main_Page) to make everything work nicely. It was pretty easy to get it working the way I wanted.
Also, there is a customized version of xubuntu at this site (http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ubuntu:eeexubuntu:home) that I've heard works well out of the box. This cd will also let you make a usb stick than can install eeexubuntu if you don't own an external cd drive.

I keep hearing about how great these are and now I really want one but should I wait for a bit larger screen and larger drive?

The longer you wait, the more power they will have and the cheaper they will become.

However, as long as you are waiting, you will not have one.

Where is your sweet spot between price, function, need and patience?

Frankly, the 7" screen and 4 GB storage are perfectly fine. I have a full-featured KDE desktop on mine, which taxes ~2.5 GB space, and is perfectly usable at 800x480. The screen is of very good quality too, watching movies on it is no problem at all.

They are selling the the Eee PC all over the place here in white and black. (with Linux). There is no doubt the price will drop and the specs will improve. I won't buy it yet because I already have a 13.3" portable notebook with Ubuntu. I look forward to bigger screens and more storage.I hope ASUS stays committed to Linux models! But the cat is out of the bag- probably.

It is an amazing machine. I use it everyday. I have xubuntu installed. I tried Ubuntu but it was a little too slow for the purpose. I have few tweaks added and it boots to desktop in just over 30 seconds.

One of our competitors are struggling to introduce laptops for thier ssles team. They have apparently been working on this project since before Christmas. I picked up the eeepc last Friday and now they are ready to go :D

Those of you who installed Ubuntu on the EEE, is there really a compelling reason to use Ubuntu, rather then the os it came with other then "because you can"? I've heard great things about the interface on the factory install, and I would think that modified IceWM would run faster then anything gnome or even KDE based. Just wondering.

Because different people have different tastes ? If you like the default thing, that's fine. I don't.

OpenOffice and Firefox are both installed by default on the default OS. It does have an update manager, which functions somewhat like Ubuntu's. The repository on the original OS is a little small, but you can expand it if you need to. The wiki at this site (http://wiki.eeeuser.com/) is very good for answering any other questions you might have.

I can understand the taste thing, I was just wondering if Ubuntu offered any kind of advantage over the default desktop. IE software selection, speed etc...

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10, which does recognize the 2 gig of memory installed (dirt cheap). I believe the original OS only sees 1 gig.

I love the machine, ,BTW.

Hi, Just got EeePC & having trouble with wireless networking. Set it up, found network (apple airport) but says in status, "pending". Has done for about an hour. Simple cures please, not 2 tech savvy.

Hmm, the simple cure is to replace the apple airport with something standard...

BTW, I just got virtualbox running on mine with Windows XP in there, just for the heck of it!

I'm hoping to get my hands on one of these this week. My buddy's got one and loves it. Loves the portability of it. He's a professor and usually carries a 10 pound laptop case. Now he's down to 2 pounds for the eeepc. I also have to check with him, but I think he also has OSX running on it.
