I recently interviewed for a position in Palo Alto and I'm trying to process whether or not I'll want to take the position if it is offered. Given all the technology around I assume there is a big FOSS scene, but what is the punk/hardcore/straight edge and maybe metal scenes like? San Fran is of course known as a hippie place, so I assume the straight edge scene isn't big, but there's NOFX and the Dead Kennedys and such that have come out of the area, so I'm curious as to if that spreads south east to San Jose or what.

Anything else about which I should know?

Thanks!

I know it's a bit late, but...

There's a decent music scene out here. You can find just about any type of music you want. Sounds like you're kind of into the punk scene. Check out the list for the bay area. Not all the bands on the list are punk (plenty of ska and indie). As a (former) musician here in the Bay Area I can say that the scene really varies depending on the bands playing, which I guess would be true of anywhere...
