Hi, how is Xubuntu these days? I ask as I have an old computer lying around (celeron, 512 ram) that my wife has asked if I could set up for her to do e-mail and browsing. I would have thought that Xubuntu would be fine on it but what are peoples experience of it these days. I haven't used it for a while now. Would anyone recommend using an even lighter OS?

I tried Xubuntu for a while. Xubuntu 7.10 Gutsy is really sleek looking and fast. If you mean 512mb of ram, Xubuntu or normal Ubuntu will run well. Less than 128mb I advise another distro.

Xubuntu 7.10 would be fine if the Celeron's 600mhz or more.

If 7.10 boots slow, this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=580903) might cure it.

Other distros to consider are Zenwalk and Elive.

I use Xubuntu on all my laptops , always fast with the exception of my toshiba satellite with a radeon mobility igp 7000 nothing runs fast on it but xubuntu is
tolerable.
The only thing i dislike is there is no network browser, for this i had to install PYNeighborhood .
