View Full Version : GNOME Skin for Opera

For those of you that have downloaded Opera now that it is free, you have probably noticed that its UI is vastly different than our beloved GNOME desktop. I noticed it too, and it irked me. I like apps to have a consistent look and feel.

So rather than whine about it I created a GNOME skin for Opera that makes the browser much more consistent with the GNOME UI.

You may preview the skin here (http://my.opera.com/community/customize/comments.dml?id=3237). Due to a screw-up on my part the skin is improperly named on the Opera site (the actual name is "GNOME Opera 1.0" and not "mneptok"). That shall be fixed in the next few days.

If you're using Opera, you may immediately install the skin here (http://my.opera.com/mneptok/skins/get.pl?id=3237).

If you're morbidly curious, you can read about my thoughts on the issue on my blog (http://www.mneptok.com/article.php?story=2005092501240979).

Enjoy.

UPDATE

An updated version can now be found here (http://my.opera.com/community/customize/comments.dml?id=3255).

Installation URL is here (http://my.opera.com/mneptok/skins/get.pl?id=3255).

I don't use Opera just because it's a Qt-app. This makes Opera more "GTK'ish", so thanks :-).

How to install the Gnome skin? I downloaded it and it is in .zip format.
I'm a newbie and am confused.

[/home/endangst/Desktop/GNOME Opera 1.1.zip]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/endangst/Desktop/GNOME Opera 1.1.zip or
/home/endangst/Desktop/GNOME Opera 1.1.zip.zip, and cannot find /home/endangst/Desktop/GNOME Opera 1.1.zip.ZIP, period.

If you're using Opera, just go to the "Installation URL" and Opera should automatically install the skin and ask if you want to keep it.

If the author is still reading the thread, I tried the skin and I like the style, but I keep going back to Opera's default skin because I like the way it gives a slightly different color to the separate main elements - tabs, browser window, and sidebar (a slight gradient on the sidebar). A lot of skins don't do this (the KDE-style ones don't do it either), but I wish they would because it sure makes things feel less cluttered.

Anyway, thanks for your work!
