It really depends on the arrangements between the webmaster and the advertising company The common ways are:

Pay by number of impressions usually a rate for each 1000 impressions
Pay per click
Pay for a lead. For example sending a inquiry for a product or service, downloading a piece of software etc
Pay for a sale

Depends on the advertising contract.

With Google Ads, I get a few cents per 1000 "impressions" (times the ads are shown) and a bunch more cents for each click-through. One day I got 70,000 hits because I was on the front page of Digg, and that earned about $30, so that'd be about 50 cents for 1000 clicks, except that doesn't sound right. Usually I only get like 3 cents, so I'm guessing it's probably kind of tiered. Once it was clear I was getting a ton of views at that time, the value of the views probably went up.

Well, I thought it was per times viewed. Then lookged on the google ads page, and it says clicks.

I just make sure to turn off adblock on the sites I'd like to support, but now I have to click too!
