I just read the bigfixes. They seem to be putting some considerable effort in it. :)

Thanks for the tip! For some reason Skype's site links me to an old version (Version 1.4.0.118.) when I manually navigate to the download page. Appreciate the link!

Use Synaptic package manager to first remove your previous install of skype before installing the new.

True, but you can still use the 32-bit version under 64-bit without much difficulty
