View Full Version : FAQ: Polls about languages

Statisticians tell you that self-selected online poll can be quite misleading, and careful processing is needed to extract statistically significant data.

One of precautions is, test subjects should have no idea what is being measured, so they cannot influence results.

Of course we cannot process results in any way, so they are very rough estimate of the truth - even less than common surveys.

Saying that, here are polls:

Best first language for beginner (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=528134) - Our choice was Python, but yours might be different, depending of language used/preferred by your mentor. But if you don't have a mentor and you are on your own, Python is your best choice.

There are also other ways to compare languages with some degree of fact-based argumentation:

Compare popularity of languages in FOSS projects (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=710230) (by number of commits), with trends visible
TIOBE index (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=681661) compares books, jobs and other info
