as i understand it, the army uses a mix of a bunch of stuff, depending on whatever they find works best for a particular task. i imagine there are a lot of fields in which they use a mix. i was talking to a physicist one night who does cancer research. being a then goofy-eyed linux noob, i asked him what OS they used and he said they use a mix of things, including windows, linux and macs, adding that it depended on the task which one they used at any given time.

I wonder what they mean by what works best for a certain task. I can understand that Windows might be the best choice when non-technical people need to use a computer and are only accustomed to Windows. Or a Linux distro when you need stability. But why would they use a Mac for example?

Designers like Macs - so maybe weapons designers do as well :)

At least now US commanders won't have to see this option in Windows:

You are about to launch your defensive missiles!
Are you sure you want to do this?
