Hi there I was wondering if someone could fill in the blanks.

Is ubuntu a form of debian?

I guess Ubuntu uses a lot of the debian packages

and it is based on the debian packet structure

every 6 months the ubuntu devs take the debian source and build on it

Just as Linux Mint is Ubuntu slightly modified, so Ubuntu is Debian slightly modified.

Essential a snapshot of Debian Sid (IIRC) is taken every six months and then modified and added to by Ubuntu developers.

A good analogy may be that Ubuntu is to Debian as Mint is to Ubuntu. Where Mint takes Ubuntu and adds lots of non-free bits that many people want, Ubuntu takes Debian and adds lots of updated software that many people want. Underneath, it's still Debian but with a lot of tweaks and additions.

This is very common in Linux and other OSS software. Red Hat and Fedora are linked in a similar way, as are Sabayon and Gentoo. It's a good thing because then we all get to share in the advances made by other groups, but still get the choice of using what we want to use.

Ubuntu is a form of Debian. Ubuntu expands on a lot of things, but it is a form of debian.

So if I am searching for some software and I find it but there is no ubuntu package i can install the debian one?

Usually, yes, but if there's a version in Synaptic, stick with it unless you've got a real good reason.

Although some make a great deal of the "conflict", truth is the two projects work close together. Since Ubuntu, Debian has changed, for the better.

Also, IMO, the "conflict" is overblown.
