I'm looking for a web host for hosting my tutorial website Archux (http://knightsfamilyhistory.com/drupal6). I want to move away from taking up my dad's hosting and use something else. I don't want to have to pay a large fee when I sign up, I want to pay small charges every month. Does anyone know of a good host that lets me do this?

What is your budget, and what are your requirements? A few places you could look at are:

DreamHost (http://www.dreamhost.com) - It's my 3rd year on this host (PM me if you want a promo code to knock $50 off your first year). It features SSH shell access, one-click installs, and growing disk and data transfer allocations. More notably, their web panels are written in-house. It will cost $9.95/mo when paid up-front annually.
1and1 (http://www.1and1.com) - $2-$10/month
Media Temple (http://www.mediatemple.com) - $20/month

Well I would recommend freehostia (http://nathangrubb.freehostia.com) or hostgator (http://hostgator.com)

PS: I host my website on freehostia

My requirements will be PHP5, decent amount of web space, mySQL and I'm not sure about the bandwidth, how much traffic do you think a site like this would get? My budget is as low as possible..

EDIT: I had a look at Dreamhost and it says I will pay $286 if I pay for 3 years? Will this be gradual or will this be paid now?

I have a link to my web host (Site5) in my sig. The catch is that you have to pay up front to get the best price. For what it's worth, I've had a good experience with them.

I'm very happy with NearlyFreeSpeech.NET (http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/), and I think it's just what you're looking for. You just need $0.25 to sign up, and you pay as you go. You can have unused funds refunded at any time.

Disk space: $0.01 per MB per month
Bandwidth: $1 for the first GB and goes down from there.
MySQL: $0.01 per day.

Plus, they have PHP5.

I'm with knownhost.com and I'm happy with them. Also I had real good luck with http://dimensionservers.com/ (I needed VPS which they did not offer when I went to KnownHost)

Check out http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ lots of information on hosting companies. And you can sometimes find specials for hosting.

I use http://steadfast.net and like them quite a lot. They offer very affordable NOT OVERSOLD shared hosting plans.

I've actually had a look at Web Hosting Buzz (http://webhostingbuzz.com) and Bluehost (http://bluehost.com) and the first is apparently very compatible with Drupal. But I think they require that you pay yearly (pay a large fee when you sign up) which I don't like..the packages they provide are very good though.

Have you considered Downtownhost or A2hosting?

Steadfast Networks are very good.

I would not recommend Bluehost. Read about my horror with Bluehost. (http://inetintegrity.com/weblog/?p=1)

+1 I have been using Site5 for a year now and they more than meet my needs.
