Hi,

This project is very possible with Linux, we just need one electrician that could open source for us the diagram/schematic of an interface Linux to electricity plugs, heating systems, ... cooking, kitchen.

Hence with the voice recognition we have in linux, sphinx, here we may say to an usb mic. or mic of the main linux server:
"switch on kitchen light"
or for cooking, to switch off things...

Here is some projects: http://www2.imm.dtu.dk/~cdj/SmartHouseWebSite/projects.html

we can be the first, since "Linux is allmighty." :)

Let's dream ! :)

Something like this might work for you:
http://www.hobby-boards.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=1504

It uses a 1-wire bus. It would be easy to interface with a furnace, I've done the same thing with another board. Lights and other low power appliances would be easy as well, but stuff that pulls more current would require the use of heavier duty relays or some solid state relays.
