i clarify residential because there is a wal-mart about 500 feet from my house and it has four-six different APs, all WPA-secured.

Duh ;)

Now that I've moved into an apartment complex, there are at least a dozen other signals within range. My first night in the new place I was without Internet and found only two unsecure signals. Pretty good that the masses are starting to learn a little security.

my pcs and my nokia internet tablet were all named after fruit (satsuma, mango, banana), along with my wifi (kiwi), but now my main computer is called livingroom, since that's where it is. which is kinda boring.

before i got the internet in our new flat and i was snooping around and noticed that even kiwi is more interesting that most other peoples. someone did have one called cosmos-gudi though, which was a little odd. about 40 apartments have "BTHomeHub-*****". all with just wep security. good old british telecom.

My dad wanted to scare away crackers, so the name is Hacker Bandits, to keep up with societies defentions. Its in mixed mode, for some reason all of our computers are out of wack in what they support.

Linux supports everything, vista only supports wpa2, dads computer only supported wep, for some reason when my brother the computer genius came in to town, it started supporting wpa (he didn't touch anything). Other brothers computer only supports wep and wpa. I though I should use wpa2 since I can, and at times, have no choice.

Our SSID is FitzFam (short for fitzgibbons family... genious, huh?), but it's not broadcast because I know the info and don't need to.

...vista only supports wpa2...

I use WEP (128 bit hex key) with vista business and home premium and a huge array of wifi adapters, and it never once has complained.

I have never understood why home users need to encrypt their home wifi so tightly. 63 character password on wpa2? To me thats nothing more than a massive PITA when your buddies come over for a lan party or you need to reinstall for whatever reason. OMG, someone might drive up to my house and sit in my driveway and break into my wireless... before I put such a massive annoyance on my wireless I'd take steps to prevent the far more likely occurrence of physical break ins. Besides, if someone hacked my wifi and stole some bandwidth for a bit, who /really/ cares. Its not like they have any access to any data, my computers are firewalled anyways. And if they were to download kiddy porn or something that could come back to me, I have my routers logs to prove that the transfer was to some MAC address that wasn't any of my computers.

Actually, it doesn't depend on the OS, it depends on the type of wireless pci/usb card you use.

Mine is, "Free Secure Internet" and it's wide open. The connection runs through my bridged network cards, so I can sniff all the traffic and make sure no one is sending spam or downloading pictures of naked children. Of course, if they login to MySpace or email I might "accidentally" find that in the logs. ;)

SSID is "DEEP"

All the device hostnames are Pearl Jam song titles. It's secured with WPA, and I recently turned on broadcasting of the SSID so WICD would work with it easily.

I've got 2 Linksys WRT54G routers (giventofly & evenflow) running in WDS mode -- the wife took one look at the lan cable running over a doorway to the Xbox360 (crazymary) and siad, "No Way!" So, now the Xbox is plugged into one of the routers, which connects to the other router wirelessly.

geil, my sister came up with it, lol, it's German and no not dirty, lol.

Actually it does mean something dirty. Both Kingsley and Toost are right to a degree.

Geil originally mean horny. But the young started using the word. So in the last 10 years geil started also meaning a lot of other things. It mostly depends on the context. For example if used for a person it can mean that said person hot/sexy/... . Used on an object or just in general as "Das ist aber geil" it can mean "Oh that's cool". Nevertheless the original meaning of geil = horny also still stands. And most old people don't "appreciate" people just running around shouting out "geil this, geil that". But I guess that was the reason people started using that word more commonly in the first place. As an act of rebellion against their parents. I would say the best word to compare it to in English would be the word "f*ck". Which also went from one meaning of sexual intercourse to basically every meaning. "She's f*cking hot", "What the f*ck?" and so.
