Hi all,

if there is one, then please, let me know...if not do you think it would be worthwhile building a wiki/forum community specific for audio production on Linux. A place where you can share both info on setting up and running the software (e.g. Ubuntu Studio and related apps, but also any other distro) and knowledge on the art/technique of recording?

Hey,

You might want to check out http://ubuntustudio.org/ which is a version of Ubuntu honed for audio/media.

Jack.

Thank you jackocleebrown. I am aware of the ubuntustudio website, for support however it sends you back on these forums, which are no doubt a great place for solving issues on application X or Y and creating a lively community of Ubuntu users, however being general on Ubuntu, maybe they don't favour the creation of a community of musicians, sound engineers, etc.. interested in using Linux for audio production. Besides, Ubuntu studio doesn't have its own sub-forum, all ubuntu studio issues (incluing video/graphics) are lumped together under the multimedia production section. Although I guess there are good reasons for this, I find it makes it difficult for the to say a musician newbie to linux to locate the relevant info for creating music. It was difficult even for me, though I've been in these forums for almost 2 years...

In other words, I was thinking more of a website really dedicated just to audio production, where along the tutorial/forum discussion on "how to run application X", there is a tutorial on say, "how to achieve that special sound effect with application Y". Something that probably would not be of great interest to linux users that are not into audio recording.

This may sound silly, but have you tried the Multimedia Production area of the Ubuntu Forums? I would think they would have at least some of what you are looking for.

If that doesn't float your boat, and you're not too stuck to Ubuntu, you can try the JackLab (http://jacklab.net/jacklaborg/english/)forums (http://forum.jacklab.net/). It's an ubuntu studio like distro, only it's using openSUSE as a base. Looks pretty nice. Hope that helps!

If not, then maybe you should build up your wiki, and get a community going. It's kind of the open source moto: build it because you want it, and chances are others will too.

Thanks Incense, those you mention are indeed useful resources, but maybe I should really try to build a website around my idea, something geared towards musicians and audio professionals, and distro agnostic.
