I have way too many USB devices, and it's a pain connecting and disconnecting them from my laptop all the time. So I'm looking for a USB hub.
From your experience do USB hubs generally work well with Linux? If so, should I look out for any specific ones, or will any generic hub work fine?

just get a generic no-name self powered hub, they work fine.

From my experience pretty much any old USB hub should work fine. I certainly haven't encountered any that are troublesome for me.

I can't say I've had any trouble connecting USB hubs at all. Some device types may give trouble such as Webcams and Wireless adapters but the hubs are usually quite generic.

I'm thinking of buying this one:

Do you think it will work fine? I can't find any information about it working under Ubuntu.

well keep in mind most hardware will give you only windows or maybe OSX specs on the side of the box, the best way to find if it will work or not is to try it...
you can always return it.

I don't think any hub would be a problem. They are not actually a device that requires drivers. They are basically just a splitter and some of them boost the power. They don't use drivers, as far as I can tell, so I think any hub would work.

It will be a long time before you find something that specifically mentions "works with Ubuntu".

I've used tons of USB hubs with Linux, none of them have mentioned Linux support, and all of them have worked.

I have hubs on Dapper and Fiesty both OK. The only funny I can remember is with Zen devices.

If you're going to get a 7-port usb hub, and put on it as many devices (I can understand the need for one single thing to plug-in/plug-out when you want to take your laptop away) make sure you get a usb hub that can be externally powered. I just bought a small usb hub from trust and it works fine, but if I connect too many devices that draw power from the usb port it shuts down (ie adsl modem, mouse, a small lamp :D, etc).

SonicSteve, I hate to break it to ya, but I can tell you for a fact that that Nexxtech USB hub does NOT work with Linux. I'm using Linux Mint Daryna Xfce edition, and when I tried to plug my flash drive into it, my Xfce desktop just sat there like a bump on a log. What's worse is, my wife got me the next unit down, which only has 4 USB jacks in it, for Christmas. :(
In fact, I've NEVER gotten a USB hub to work with Linux (any distro) before. I may give another unit a try though, because I have a Circuit City gift card I got for Christmas I still haven't used yet. But with the Nexxtech, I'm afraid you're outta luck.

Hi Guys, I have an external 4 port hub and if I plug in (say) a memory stick or whatever, 'lsusb' sees it, but that's all. It doesn't get mounted. USB phone also doesn't work. The hub works fine under Windows. It's the same problem on Gutsy and all prev versions. Any ideas?
Cheers, Mike

Hey RussianVodka -- did you get a USB hub? If so, what brand? I'm having trouble now with a USB/Parallel port adapter and I've discovered there are lots of postings on the web about USB ports not being able to be "activated" on ubuntu ...was wondering if you had success (in case you're still listening...)

I have a nice Belkin one that I bought for $12 at Best Buy. Works great with Linux.

I've never had a USB hub not work with Ubuntu - mostly have Belkins.

Frankly, thus far this has been my absolute favorite USB hub, and also one of the most reliable:
