Compiling and Dependencies

I'm not a newbie to Linux (been using it since the original Slackware distro) but am a newbie to Ubuntu. I'm using Hoary and trying to use Postfix 2.2. I gave up on the Debian package, as it created a dependency hell for me, and am familiar with compiling Postfix on other distros. My problem is getting other packages, in particular anacron, to recognize the compiled Postfix as a legitimate dependency mail server.

What am I missing here?

The version is too old and doesn't contain the anvil functionality I require. I'm trying to move from an existing Slackware system to Ubuntu.
