Looks like IBM is officially bringing its Lotus Notes and Symphony, fully supported, to Ubuntu (http://computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=hardware&articleId=9058900&taxonomyId=12&intsrc=kc_top). What was really interesting in the article is this part:

Ubuntu support for Notes and Symphony were a direct response to demand from customers. [...] "Some of the requests came from big companies" with as many as 100,000 users that are interested in moving to Ubuntu Linux on the desktop.

[...]

For the past six years or so, some prognosticators have predicted that Linux on the corporate desktop was finally ready, but the move has never taken hold in a major way.

Satyadas said IBM thinks that this year, it will happen.

"All the stars are lining up," he said. "Everybody has been saying that since 2001 except IBM. We never said that, but we are saying that now."

We are all skeptical about claims of the "Year of the Linux Desktop", but this optimism from IBM is nonetheless interesting. In any case, it sounds like desktop Linux and Ubuntu in particular are doing well.

Delighted by this!

I hope it dislodges Open Office as the default Office Suite for Ubuntu. IMHO Symphony is the best free, fast and resource friendly Office Software there is

Not really last time I checked, but for me even if IBM doesnt use a GPL license I would like them to offer decent support for linux in general nonetheless.

Wow! :guitar:
Even if it's not the year of the Linux desktop that's still pretty good for Linux overall. More support from big corporations.

Because Lotus Symphony is based on the 1.1.4 version of OpenOffice.org which was dual licensed under both the LGPL as well as Sun's own SISSL which allowed for entities to change the code without releasing their changes, IBM does not have to release the source code of Symphony.

I think it is time to teach Bill Gates and Windows how to share. He is acting like a spoiled rotten little kid with a new toy. He doesn't play well with others, he always gets his way. Basicly he is the equilant of the school yard bully,

Symphony requires 512 MB of RAM and 540 MB of hard drive space.

No thank you! Even OpenOffice is lighter then that! Good to see IBM playing nicely with our side though.
