View Full Version : Is this too good to be true?

I found these two new computers on ebay and they look too good to be true. I don't think you could build a cheaper computer (of equivalent performance) yourself. Is there something wrong with them that i may have overlooked?

Strictly speaking, it's NOT a 9.6Ghz. It's 2.4Ghx for that chip, so for a start off it's misleading advertising. That should tell you something about the people selling it. :D

Walk away, there are better deals out there from more reputable companies

600W isnt very much power for all that hardware either

and the seller has lots of feedback but a few too many negatives/neutrals on that very system you are looking at. obviously there is something wrong with the machine or they wouldnt/couldnt sell it for that much.

9.6ghz... straight out lie. It's a 2.4ghz quad-core...

That alone should tell you something is not right.

EDIT: Completely missed that this was already stated :-P

They are built by Palicomp. My last PC was built by Palicomp. I bid on the basic spec and then upgraded lots of things. It was absolutely excellent. Palicomp where brilliant. It arrived promptly, no problems whatsoever. I can't praise them enough.

My Nephew is doing A levels I have given it to him. The PC was only a year old. This time ( a couple of months ago) I went to Bess-Systems on Ebay and got a Quad Core. Giving my PC to my Nephew was my excuse to upgrade to a Quad Core:)

Bess-System was equally as brilliant as Palicomp. Again I upgraded it after bidding on the basic spec.

I would now always buy a computer this way, by having a custom build. Palicomp and Bess-Systems are brilliant I would use them both again without hesitation.

So yes go for it.

Helen

Will you really need two graphics cards?

Well for gamers it's nice.. i'm not much into hardware anymore but isn't the 8500 a budget model, so putting it into SLI i wonder how much use it has over buying 1 fast videocard.. like atleast a 8600 GT which is allready a mid-range card...the 8800 series will probably be even better choice for gamers..

I know he is lying about the 9.6GHz thing, but that is how the seller would attract unknowledgable buyers. It is not honest, but it is not as bad as some people say.

They have 14500 reviews, so they seem pretty reliable. I'm not buying a new computer any time soon, it's just I wanted to make sure it wasn't a scam.

A similar spec PC with monitor would cost a lot more, even if it was self-built and the parts were bought from newegg (and this is not an option in the uk), so it does seem pretty good value for money.

I will say one thing: saying it's 9.6GHz isn't actually that far off. I mean, take 2.4GHz X 4 (since it's a quad-core), and you do get 9.6GHz. Makes sense, from a certain point of view...

Think of it more like four tractors in a row pulling a load at the same speed rather than one tractor going four times as fast and it will make more sense.

Four tractors can pull more load, they cant run four times as fast.

In many benchmarks dual core CPU's outperform similarly priced four core CPU's because the perfect connecting drawbar for the four tractors hasn't been invented yet. :D

Someone mentioned this, but is the 600W PSU too weak to handle this system?

Also two 8500s in SLI is slower (by alot) then a single 7800.

Never trust the ratings of no-name PSU's, they are just the maximum claimed peak output, how much sustained load the PSU is able to deliver is determined by quality of manufacture, which is partly why I build my own PC's.

Seasonic or Corsair are extremely good PSU's.

WHAT!!! I mean WHAT!!!!! It makes NO sense from any point of view other than it's a distortion of the truth. The system architecture of a quad core chip, doe's not mean that they run linearly. They DO NOT rake up the processing power by addition of dies, 2.4Ghz + 2.4Ghz + 2.4Ghz + 2.4Ghz. It's like saying a Prius Hybrid should be faster than a standard single engine model due to the fact it has two drive units! pfff Plus, there are few programs that can actually take advantage of quad core at the moment.

I got a cheap 600W PSU cos it had shiny lights ant it couldnt even run my system (7600 gs SLI, 2.2 CPU, 1 GIG ram - not a flying machine), i had to get a 650 from a reputable company to make it work (it was the SLI that drew too much i think).

To be honest 600 probably would run mine if the PSU actually put out 600 but i think it was putting out 600 for 3 seconds then dropping back to ~400 or sommin, it sucked. Anyway, bottom line as always, u general get what u pay for with hardware.

the system in my profile uses 432watts, 600 is well enough especially for the lowend gfx cards

Are you saying that the 600W PSU should be able to handle that system.
