hi everyone.

I got the greatest shock yesterday I was at a friends house look at the junk mail and found a main stream company was offering as a install insteads of windows linux. I rang the store and asked was this right, with a reply of yes, I asked what version of linux they did not have a clue. Any way they turned it on and found out it was ubuntu 7.10. Wow Wow Wow. I asked if any money was going back to the open source product they did not know. Does any Know is this new or does it happen a lot in other countries? Does money come back to the community. Away it made my day.

Dell is doing this, as well as system76, and [b]many[/b[ others. No, the money generally does not go back to the community.

Do they charge extra for the Ubuntu-version?

No they don't charge extra money for having an unbuntu os. They are selling a very cheap laptop by Australia standards

Do they charge less for installing Ubuntu on it, compared to Windows?

I asked if any money was going back to the open source product they did not know.

They don't have to - That's the freedom in free software. And they are already helping the community a great deal by selling Desktops with Linux installed. So I hope they make profit.

They come pre-installed from the manufacture. As to if there is a cost for instalation I don't know. But the sale of the lap to is about $150aud less than if it had windows installed.

do they come with full post sale support or is the user left to find that for themselves?

January 28th, 2008, 01:17 AM
That is a very good question . This is any issue as when I went into linux it took me two to three weeks to even find out how to get support. Then if you don't know how to use forums for instance it then become a bigger issue. You would hope that they would at least point you in the right direction. I know that the sales people there would have know idea.

When you say mainstream company, do you mean **** Smith? I know they used to sell Linux PCs in New Zealand a few years back (Fedora I think). I checked the Australian website, but couldn't see anything about Linux PCs.

That's almost enough to forgive them for butchering one of the greatest pop songs ever written for their TV commercials.
