On Jan. 23, Dell quietly announced that it was releasing the Dell XPS 1330n to the European market. In addition, for the first time, Dell is allowing its customers in Spain to order this and other PCs with pre-loaded Ubuntu Linux. The Ubuntu-equipped XPS 1330 will be available to North American customers the first week of the February.

Hmm, I guess that the announcement by Acer, that they plan to sell 5 million Linux based Eee PCs this year, probably has something to do with it.

In contrast, Apple sold less than 4 million machines last year, so Asus plans on overtaking them in one bound.

Maybe now would be a good time for PC World to consider selling Linux PCs in its retail stores throughout the UK. I see benefits that way for them.:)

Good news! So all the hardware is supported by Ubuntu? Suspend/Hibernate, webcam etc? If it is..it will be my next laptop.

Good news! So all the hardware is supported by Ubuntu? Suspend/Hibernate, webcam etc? If it is..it will be my next laptop.

The XPS 1330n includes an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a 13.3-inch WXGA display that supports a resolution of 1280x800, and a 2.0MP webcam. A 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS is available as an upgrade option (and Dell will install the proprietary NVIDIA drivers by default). Unlike the standard Windows-based XPS M1330, the Ubuntu model doesn't come with a biometric fingerprint reader (http://arstechnica.com/journals/linux.ars/2008/01/23/dell-adds-xps-1330n-to-its-ubuntu-lineup-for-europe).

Here's an interesting observation.

I went to the M1330 dell page (windows) and built a 2.0Ghz 3GB memory 250GB harddisk machine with nvidia and an additional external hard drive of 250gb (backup). As part of a discount, I got a price of $1300+...

Then i went to the French Dell website and built a 1330n machine (with pretty much the same stuff) with Ubuntu. Without the external hard disk, it costs $2200+.

Here's the interesting bit: 1330n will come out on the first week of Feb 2008. This is right after the expiration date of the above mentioned discount for M1330.

To be honest, if I were to buy a laptop, I would not take the risk (of waiting for a probable discount on 1330n, which is absent in the French Dell website) and buy the M1330 /now/ and fiddle with linux later and save about $700-$900...
