Seriously, why doesn't Nvidia fix the 100% fan bug? It's been a month now... I specifically chose Nvidia over ATI because of their Linux support, but now I'm disappointed.

I hate to be the devils advocate in this one but the answer is simple... profit.

NVIDIA and ATI must spend less on development and support then they earn for their product to turn a profit; the less they have to spend on driver development, the more profit they get to keep. If they spend lots of money on kick @ss drivers for Linux, what do they get back if the amount of customers using Linux is less then 1%.

I hear you, and will pass you a beer. But the true answer is you. Print out flyers, become more friendly to computer n00bs at work, share with them a free Ubuntu CD, and offer to support them if they install Ubuntu. Only if more businesses or normal people start using Ubuntu/Linux will this ever change.

I am still Miffed that the UT3 managers did not see it worth the cost to include the Linux binaries in the store purchasable software, as an example. But as it stands, Linux is still a hobbyist OS.
(someone please correct me if I am wrong!)

Not on the server market. But servers usually do not need a videocard.

What's that bug? On which hardware does it occur?

Cool. Looks like they're taking care of it. Now if AMD would only get their Radeon cards to not be slow with Compiz.

ah, i'm glad i stuck with the beta driver. It should still be out there. Use it instead if don't want the fan spinning up all the time

i found a temporary fix for my card. what you do is take to power for the fan and put it into a fan bay controler. It works with some ajustment. :(

Since 99% of stock graphics card fans are noisy, ineffective and of low quality, I recommend the permanent fix of replacing the whole thing with something better and quieter. Zalman has some pretty good coolers to tackle the problem. My Geforce 8800 GTS went from hot (75C) and noisy to cool (50C) and quiet pretty nicely.

the 8800gt has been found to be fairly effective and quiet in reviews and in my experience. Although i'm comparing that with a evga 6800gt and a silent 5200

I have just installed Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS 512mb a week before. At first start up I was able to see ubuntu only as command mode (like MS DOS black screen with terminals). Then I got information from Ubuntu forum how to install nvidia drivers from repo. I just installed nvidia restricted drivers in ubuntu, all of the sudden after a reboot, ubuntu started to work perfectly till this micro second. Such brilliant community makes Ubuntu a best distribution in this planet. Hats off Ubuntu forum!
