Just in case anyone doubts that this is not Microsoft's strategy...

Steve Ballmer Shrugs Off The Critics (http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_39/b3952008.htm)

And we will win the Web. That's the current question from some people or expectation. I have the expectation and we will. And to have people having this high expectation and wanting us to move fast and get there, that's great because that's what I want, and that's what we will do. We will move fast, we will get there, we will win the Web.

Let me translate. To win something means to dominate it and to dominate it means to control it. In this sense, the win something means to wipe out all competition and control whatever you have won. So "We will win the Web" means "We will dominate the Web" which means "We will control the Web."

If you look at the kinds of innovations that you see from us in MSN, you look at some of the kinds of acquisitions we've done, companies like FrontBridge that provide services for businesses that run on the Web, new business models that we and others are embracing -- be those subscription models or advertising models -- those scenarios that leverage the power of things living out in the Internet and the set of business models that support them, we will win.

Translation: We will dominate (control) the power of the Internet and the business models that supports it (the "living things" on the Internet.) Microsoft knows that it is only through control of the Internet and the business models that supports anything of relevance on it that they will be able to sustain enough revenue to support their shareholders in the future. And just how they expect to control the Internet without a decent web browser, I don't know.

How exactly does one control the Web in the first place? Hasn't the fact that despite all the attempts to control it, porn and file-sharing and hacking still goes on practically unabated prove that no one on this earth can hope to control and to rule the Internet?

How exactly does Microsoft plan to "win the web"? Their search engine is nothing compared to Google & Yahoo (it was only about 6 months ago that that MSN got image search) almost 2x as many people use AIM as opposed to MSN Messenger, Comcast High Speed Internet is alot faster than Verizon with MSN, and everyday more people are discovering Linux and Firefox.

his comments sound like the words of a CEO trying to placate shareholders who know nothing about internet technology.

I don't ever expect MS (and specifically Gates or Ballmer) to say something like...

"yea, we have issues and it's pretty clear we have lost our ability to deliver software on any kind of time table. We have lost some key people to a variety of OSS companies and even the former head of or Server Products group left to work for Google and in his exit interview specifically sited our inability to deliver code to the users as his main reason. And you know how we feel about Kim leaving for Google, and how I want to kill that guy from Google. I hate Google and fear Linux and OSS, but since my golden parachute is already stuffed to the brim with cash I don't care, I'll preside on our long, slothful middle aged decline".

...but I'm pretty sure that is what goes through his mind every day. Even if MS packed it up tomorrow it would take the industry 10 years to shake lose of their influence, so we will be living with their silliness for a long time to come. I just try and do as much as I can without them.

Microsoft has not been the same since Gates steped down from the CEO position. I mean who else could have legally stole more to become the richest man in the world?

If by "win" he means bastardize, then yes, Microsoft will win.

This is the same company where one executive officer promised to get rid of all spam in a couple of years.

/DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS!!!!

To be honest, I don't really hate that company, I just think that so far they look stupid.

Oh dear. All I have to say if that guy is actually saying things like that, things that are really not true, and yet most of the world buys software from him, then all I have to say is oh dear.

He seems totally out of touch with reality. Totally in denial. I hope M$ is not coming to resemble the Titanic . . . I might dislike M$ products, Word with a passion, but, I mean, they have some redeeming characteristics. I just hope Ballmer doesn't take down Microsoft. I might dislike them, but they have a role to play in the modern-day world.

Wow Deja Vu! Sounds exactly like "blackbird" back in 1995 (I was only 13!)

http://www.tbtf.com/archive/0050.html

small excerpt:

"Bill Gates wants to take over the
world. (This is news?) Microsoft unveiled "Blackbird," which I'd been
hearing about for some months, believing (along with the rest of the in-
dustry) that it was Microsoft's code name for an authoring environment
for their proprietary network, MSN. No such luck. Microsoft now intends
Blackbird to displace HTML entirely as an Internet publishing platform."

Anyway just google blackbird and Microsoft. You will find more information.
