Apparently Ubuntu 2008 ships with GAIM again, too.

LOL! Ubuntu 2008! I especially like the screenshots; they are all over the place, showing the desktops of Hoary (!!!), Dapper, Feisty!

Also, the badly patched logo of Ubuntu is really funny.

Guys, don't be fooled into buying this. It's a waste of your money.

For only a buck more you can get Ubuntu and Linux XP 2008 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110212417684&ssPageName=MERC_VIC_RCRX_Pr4_PcY_BIN_IT&refitem=110212423575&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&usedrule1=CrossSell_LogicX&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget).
It's a much better deal.

Its a good way to promote Ubuntu, but I wouldn't sell 'Ubuntu 2008 edition'. Is there such a thing? I know that there is an alpha version of 8.04 available for download, but last I read it was still very much under development and a bit buggy (understandably - its at alpha stage).

They are probably selling either Dapper or Gutsy, not Hardy.

Why dishonest? The guy states that the product is free software under the GPL, and makes no effort to hide the product's name or whatever. The GPL allows people to sell the software, as long as the source code is also available.

Also, you can also buy distributions on CDs from other places too, like OSDisc.

Couldn't Canonical go after this guy for misusing the Ubuntu logo? I know you are allowed to sell GPL'd software providing that you include the source and all that good stuff.... but since there is not an official "Ubuntu 2008" release this has to violate some kind of copyright or trademark.... doesn't it?

Anyway I'm sold, only $5.95 for shipping! That beats the pants off of THESE (https://shipit.ubuntu.com/) guys!

I agree that they're being dishonest, but they aren't trying to make money off of it. They're pretty much only selling it for the cost of the media. If I had dial-up internet, I'd probably Pay a couple of bucks for someone to send me a CD.

I just think it's funny how ridiculous this is.

Also, they do not credit Canonical, and they do not mention that you can download it for free.

I think that they are making some money.

I think its OK to sell it for a token fee, if it helps promote the OS. It isn't illegal under the GPL.

That said though, to change it's name (Ubuntu 2008 edition) is somewhat misleading and may not be so legal. Certainly here in the UK he could get done under the Misrepresentation Act or the Trade Descriptions Act by implying that his version is in some way superior to the version that can be downloaded for free.

It's illegal for them to call it Ubuntu 2008, since that violates Canonicals trademark, it's also false/misleading advertising to call it a Windows OS.

And personally I think he's just trying to make dishonest money, as far as I know Ubuntu 2008 edition doesn't exist, so most likely he just put Feisty on a disc, disguised it as some new super-distro and sold it on eBay, making misleading names for it and violating Canonical's trademark, is there any way to report this for trademark violation, I'm not a member of eBay.

At least this guy says that it's called Ubuntu.
I've seen some where they package open-source programs such as OpenOffice.org and call them Office Professional without making any mention of the GPL or that the software is free to download.
