We need to discuss the features we need in a project management app. Also, we need to list suggested apps, the features they have, and pros/cons.

If you come across an app you think would be a good fit, try it out and let us know how it works!

The New Mexico Team is using PHProjekt. I haven't had a chance to look it up yet though.

There are also dotproject, ProjectPier based on activeCollab, and eGroupware which is much more than project management. I've looked at dotproject and eGroupware in the past, but its been some time.

I still like Trac. I wish they had better multi project support.

I'm comparing project management tools at the moment :-k. Here is my list so far:

Gnome Planner
GanttProject
dotProject
Tutos
ProjectPier
Open Workbench
eGroupware
Group-Office
Trac
OpenProj
]Project-Open[
Onepoint Project
Project.net
Task Juggler
Imendio Planner
Tiny ERP
phpCollab

Amazingly NONE of the options I've tried (and I've not got through all of the above yet ) fits all of my requirements :

Linux based (or platform independent)/ FLOSS
Gantt Charts (critical path analysis)
Work breakdown structure
Export to table, image, e.g. MS Project (for compatibility and sharing)
Resource levelling
Resource Cost and Task Cost analysis (or export to spreadsheet)
Not too complex/ too many software-development features

Robsteranium, consider publishing your comparative analysis to the wiki. I'd really like to see what you've discovered in your dig.

I've heard of other *nix users looking for open-source project management software going with a wiki package instead. Anyone try this approach?

Well, I've ended up with OpenERP (http://openerp.com/), but that's because I'm interested in every single one of its other features. I have not tested any other programs. Not knowing your specific needs or desktop environment, I would generally recommend Planner (http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/planner).

Use the project management software calculator from the following link http://www.valleyspeak.com/index.php/product/project-management-software-cost-calculator
to calculate your project management software cost.

thanks @peter105 for the cost calculator -- was just looking for something different to use. i'm familiar with these project management tools:

Gnome Planner
GanttProject
dotProject
Tutos
ProjectPier

Would love to hear status update if anyone has a better/best tool. Also, let me know of good project manager salary (http://www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/Project-Manager-Salary-SRCH_KO0,15.htm) resources, as my friends are telling me my salary is lagging behind the industry.

I'm also using OpenProj, it's a good Linux equivalent of MS Project. Not quite as elaborate, but it handles everything I need so far.

Interested in learning more about project-open - it seems pretty amazing but also seems pretty difficult to install at least in Ubuntu...

I am using Project Pier (http://www.projectpier.org/) as I found that to be the best Open Source Online PMS. I do miss time tracking, Gant Charts and or Agenda integration though. Especially an overview of what is up in a specific week or month using a calendar view would be a great asset. The only better ones out there I found are commercial ones, so I am sticking with Project Pier for now. And, maybe, when I finally have some time, I try to improve it myself..

Yes, its a good software but it may have issues if your project has tasks in 100's. For relatively smaller size projects, its very nice solution. However, I had it installed in Ubuntu 10.04 without any issue what so ever.
What problem did you face?

Using Onepoint Project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/opproject/) for years now I am very satisfied. It has a Gantt Chart showing critical path, runs well on ubuntu (although there is also a web solution called open edition) an interactive WBS supports export and import from/to MS Project a Resource Utilization chart and excellent plan-is comparison tools. If you require additional features like reporting functionality you may also take a look at there commercial version at http://www.onepoint-project.com (http://www.onepoint-project.com/)
