What's that I hear you cry? "Install Linux"

Here (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2001/jan/25/hacking.security)'s a link to another article, from way back in January 2001.

What's happened since then? What's changed?

Very little, it seems to me.

Score another point for Open-Source!

You see my code, you hack my code, you tell me about it, I make it better. Or, someone else makes it better.

I've always had a bad taste in my mouth about Windows that way, because they have exploits and security holes, but instead of patching that up, they spend more resources on R&D, leaving the consumer to spend more money to get virus scanners, spyware scanners, etc. So, really, the cost of using Windows isn't just $150-$400 for a license...it's $300-550 per license by the time you spend all the money needed for support software.

Plus, you feel like you're paying them to be a beta-testing for their software when it crashes on you and you have to report bugs. And it's even more infuriating when the bug reports go unnoticed, or they say "we no longer support that version...please buy the next version". What a nightmare.

And yet, you have to be a tech-savvy or geeky person to want to go around reading these articles that clarify this stuff. The common consumer, who isn't very tech-savvy, and has other things they'd rather do with their time, just knows that they're ticked off having to constantly throw money at problems that don't seem to go away.
