Does anyone know where I could get some of the very first GTK themes and Gnome Icon themes?
I have had this sudden attraction towards making my desktop look as old as possible :)

You might also search on freshmeat.net. I think it was one of the first places to store themes for Linux.

I have looked around...I'll check freshmeat out...I think one that I got was from there...:)

If that doesn't work out for you, I can set you up with a copy of Slackware '96 ... ;)

For that matter, I could probably find some of the themes that came with it. I'll have to pull it out of my CD archive and check.

Wow!
Slackware '96 ,could you?:)
Seriously ,I could probably recompile the kernel with the latest drivers and such...

Not to belittle yabbadabbadont's offer, but if you want, you could try one of these.

http://www.planetmirror.net/pub/slackware/

I'm sure if you dig around in there you can find some old themes or something.

That is certainly easier. The only problem I have, is that I don't know which version number goes with "Slackware '96" ... That's all that is listed on the original 4 CD jewel case. I know that it was the first slack release to use the 2.0 kernel.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that Distrowatch had that information.

Thanks K.Mandla for the link...I'll start downloading it tonight :)

yabbadabbadont:Wow! 4 cd's! Must have been the deluxe edition ...:)

Disc 1 R: Installation files and live file system.
Disc 2: Linux Archives: Tcl/Tk and Sunsite.unc.edu
Disc 3 R: Linux Archives: Sunsite.unc.edu
Disc 4 R: Linux Archives: Tsx11.mit.edu

No idea why disc 2 is labeled differently :?

At the time that I first installed it, I had no idea what the extra three discs were for. (Now it is kind of neat as a time capsule)

K.Mandla...am I doing something wrong?
The link you gave me for slackware doesn't seem to have any downloads listed...
So I clicked search planet mirror for slackware 3.1 but when I click on the link to it,there is no download...
EDIT: it now tells me this...

slackware archive or /pub/slackware/slackware-3.1/ could not be found!
Try to go up on the file tree by clicking:
/pub/slackware/slackware-3.1
/pub/slackware
/pub

P.S...does the wayback machine have archives of old linux .iso's?

Sometimes it works.... other times it doesn't. That's a quality website that is.

I'll look on the live CD and see which themes I can find.

Edit: After looking around on the CD, I came to the realization that this is was a fools errand... to the best of my knowledge, there wasn't a GTK+ toolkit back then. I don't think that there was a QT then either. I think that you'll have to move your search forward a few years.

Edit2: Looks like Slackware '96 was one year too early. From Wikipedia
GTK+ was initially created for the GNU Image Manipulation Program, a raster graphics editor, in 1997 by Spencer Kimball, Peter Mattis, and Josh MacDonald—all of whom were members of eXperimental Computing Facility (XCF) at UC Berkeley.

That's sad...I'll look at some of the more recent (4.x) ones then...thanks for your help though!:):)

You'd need GTK1 themes redone for GTK2, because they're not compatible.

This is what it should look like:

http://www.netbsd.org/gallery/in-Action/jmmv-gnome.jpg
http://www.pro-linux.de/berichte/jpgs/redhat73/rhl73gnome.jpg

The old icon theme, which isn't really complete: http://art.gnome.org/themes/icon/342

Then you'd need something motif-like I guess: http://art.gnome.org/themes/gtk2/725, but the colors are wrong.

It's much easier to theme KDE to look like the old versions, because all the styles, icons and window decorations are available in the KDE packages.

 Well, I salute you all for chasing this goal, but I don't think I'll be joining you on this one. :???:

You can get close to that by using Crux window borders, Raleigh GTK+ controls, and the hicolor icon theme.

Gnome 1.4 did have some nicer icons and Nautilus appearance: http://reboot.cz/obrazky/mandrake82-1.jpg

I actually liked using Gnome back then. They ruined it with Gnome 2 :-({|=

I agree, I liked gnome 1.x a lot better even with all those little lovely core dump icons scattered about....who else remembers those? :)
