Lets suppose you are able to show someone 10-20 seconds of video (screencast) of an ubuntu desktop running _something_ with no audio allowed, what 5 things would you show to outline the best of Ubuntu?

Imagine these are people who may never have seen or even heard of Ubuntu before. Your average joe watching telly.

Here's what I would show..

A little bit of compositing desktop - not too much.
Email
Firefox
Instant messenger
Openoffice.

There is a sane reason why I am asking this, all will become clear shortly, but I'd like to hear what ideas people have.

I'd do these and likely in this order ...

Wine running a recent game.
An optimised build of Firefox loading pages swiftly.
An example of a Free game (probably a recent build of Vega Strike).
The functions of a detailed MPlayer frontend.
Much Compiz show-offery.

Well without knowing the end reason its hard to say. If its just wow factor kinda stuff Id have to agree that using desktop apps with Compix effects would work.

In the end though, people wont care about what the apps are.

Think about iPhone ads. They are all about slick UI transitions.

Yeah, it's not an easy thing to answer without the full detail.

It's for a TV news segment, so they will be talking over it whilst the video is played (hopefully).

Five different things to show within 10 to 20 seconds? That's two to four seconds per function if done serially.

Can you tell a bit more about the target audience? About the impression you want to leave? What the target audience is to know, to feel or even to do after having seen the pitch? Does anyone, for instance, have to know that they just have witnessed a showing of Ubuntu?

The brief is "show the best of ubuntu" in 10-20 seconds.

I can see MMAs point about the iPhone ads, they almost only show bling. When mentioned apps I didn't expect to show them all in detail, but just have them open as we do some funky things with compiz maybe?

I dont want to overplay the compiz angle, but I know it's bling that really looks cool. Combined with something like AWM it can really make a desktop look appealing.
