I'm new to this, but so far I have been needy in the Gimp editor dept. lol.

I'm a website maker so I use:
GIMP - graphic work
Inkscape - vector and logo work
Firefox/FireFTP - checking and FTPing
IEs4linux - check sites for that awful browser
Evolution - email, calendar, Palm synching, to do lists
OpenOffice - spreadsheets, contract writing, etc
Amarok - music! (Must have for intense coding sessions...like the last 72 hours of my life...) :)

Oh, and when I (rarely these days) do print design add in:
Scribus (Desktop Publishing)
Krita (CMYK image editing)
Adobe Reader (PDF checker)

What do you use your computer for? That should help get a list of stuff to try out.

Having retired from AT&T 10 years ago, I found the thing I missed most about computers was the shell commands. Windows can't come close to Linux's power in that area.

I couldn't live without Pidgin. I have a lot of friends that use MSN and Yahoo messanger it it just makes sense to have them together in one program.

Photoshop(got 7 on crossover), Adobe Audition and OFfice 2007.
Can't live without them, and I hate the GIMP and OO.org
I use office 2003 on CO, but still doesn't have the charm of '07

Glipper (or its equivalent in KDE, Klipper), it's a clipboard manager and I can't live without, it's the first thing I download every time I make a fresh linux install

First of all, Amarok. I'm a music addict and one of the first applications I install after a clean install is Amarok. Of course, I love IRC too so XChat would probably be the second one. A text editor is something which in my opinion you can't live without, so add Kate here. Followed by Konsole, KTorrent, Kopete, Kaffeine...

Amarok looks bad in Gnome i think, and design is everything for me.
I use Listen and it's very useful. Better than Rhythmbox or Exaile i think.

Gimp - all image processing done in it for several years by now
Amarok - =D>
Emacs - for all the "simpler writing needs" (but yes, it took several years to get used to the "key language" :P
Firefox - RULES :)
Filelight - have become severely addicted to checking diskspace since I'm usually short of diskspace :)
Klipper
k3b

and then I really like Openoffice, Scribus, Kopete, Kmobiletools and a bunch of others too ...
qemu is nice to have too for playing with differnet distros right off the live-cd in question in a running system :)

Amarok and GVim, the best combination for a CS major, and OO.o writer for those nasty gen ed classes :lolflag:
and Freeciv if I have free time, the graphics for version 2.1 is a big step forward!

OpenOffice - I need it for school, since the school only has MSOffice 2003 on XP(glad they haven't switched to 2007 yet)
Opera- A very nice lightweight web browser, which I really like.
Thunar- I think that it is the best file manager created, with speed and just as many features as nautilus (except for the cd burner).
XFCE Compositor- I really like this, which makes the Desktop look slick but has almost no impact on system performance (my computer uses about 160 MB of RAM with it at startup).
Assault Cube- Addictive FPS with nice graphics and a not too high system requirement.
Brasero- Just never know when you feel the urge to go distro-hopping...
Mousepad- Pops up instantly!
XMMS- Nice non-intrusive music player for my small 30-track collection of music.

Opera
Songbird (although it has a built-in browser too)

Yeah using Flux I guess I don't need much, plus a terminal and a text editor (Nano... Vim confuses me lol).

I find it much harder to use the internet without the Spell Checker and Ad Blocker in Firefox. I don't know how I coped before them!!

Being a hobby photographer with a digital camera, I use digiKam (for organizing and post-processing the images). And I guess I have to use Gimp for any image manipulation that involves layers, so I am reading up on it right now.

Otherwise I like Firefox, Thunderbird and VLC, which I had used with Windows  already in the past.

Exaile. Gotta have music (under Gnome!)

Glipper. Gotta have text!

VLC. Best video player I have found. Mplayer would be a close second.

slrn. Most powerful usenet client.

Picasa. Just started using this one; seems very powerful.

Also, xdvdshrink, DeVeDe, Nautilus plugins, gedit, QGrubEditor, and zsh.

Synpatic- you won't get those prorams you need easily without this one.
Firefox- It keeps locking up, but you need something.
Open Office- I have to write crap for school. This is as nice as the MS stuff.
Rythmbox- I like my music, and this is the best player I found yet.
Terminal emulator- when something goes wrong, you need this.

I am intrested in a firefox alternative to try out. Anyone have a reccomendation?

I recommend Opera, although if you visit a lot flash websites it may crash.

Edit: Are your initials P.E?? (Mine are)

I do use a good bit of flash on sites. I may try it though.

No, mine are not P.E

Flock, or Swiftweasel.
Will try.

Edit: Opera does not have an amd64 version, and I can't find the other 2 in synaptic or add/remove.

No, you won't find them in the repos. Flock can be found here http://flock.com/ , but I don't think it has a 64-bit version. There is a 64-bit version of Swiftweasel, here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=195473&package_id=230717

I'll take this in a bit of a different direction.

What program do I wish I had that I can't (almost) live without?

I want TinySpell to be ported to linux!! I really want a tray/clipboard spell checker. I have dict programs, but I want something that will help me spell, not tell me the meaning!

That would make my linux life almost complete, that and TNTMpd, but I doubt that will ever happen.

-Spotify - My favourite program at the moment
-Both Internet Explorer and Firefox. I need to know what my web/intranet apps look like to other users. At work and home I have 2 computers at my desk, so changing OS is as simple as swinging my chair around.
-Schism
-Any text editor that has tabs and line numbers
-MSN messenger (for voice and video chats with my friends)
-FOP
-Visual Studio
-TVU
-Skype - because amsn doesn't always do video for me properly when I'm on Linux
-Audacity
-Paint/Kolourpaint
-Apache with PHP/MYSQL/PostGRES etc.

MUST HAVE:
Firefox, because after IE it is the most supported browser out there and even if it isn't my primary (like, say when I use KDE and Konquerer) I install it anyways for in case I run across a site that isn't compatible)
Thunderbird or Evolution with IMAP to my Gmail account, bi-directional Google Calendar access and auto-updating/importing Google Contacts.
Pidgin/Emapthy or Kopete for instant messaging. Hope Empathy includes video support for chat so I can consolidate my IMs into one for all and include video chat
OpenOffice because I still need to get things done ;) between word processor (my wife primarily) , presentations (myself primarily) and spreadsheets (myself usually)
Aisle Riot or Patience so can play Spider Solitaire when things get slow
Microsoft Publisher, for opening up and accessing our existing Publisher files until can convert them to anther DTP application (Scribus?)

LIKE TO HAVE
Gimp/Krita and Inkscape/Xara for image manipulations and to be able to open up just about any image file I run across.
Kino or KDEnlive for digital video editing, preferably with the option of pulling single frame images out and easy export into formats to send to the family.
Picasa, DigiKam or G-Thumbs for image management (browsing).. do not like F-Spot's import process
Moodevelop (because I'm a sucker for hoping it will work for me..)
Kompozer or Quanta Plus for website management/development
Any Music player that can update my iPod(be really cool if it could connect to my file server over the network instead of having to pull songs locally), would be really cool if I could listen to my Pandora radio stations through it and/or purchase music from Amazon the same way iTune users can purchase from the iTunes Store.

My list has started to change within the last week or so,but here it is -

Virtual Dub With Wine and KDenLive - Both for Video Editing using them together makes sure I get the job done :).

Gimp With a few unofficial and Offical addons - For all my main artwork like siggies, website layouts, and other things. The extra addons I use are CMYK plugin,GAP Plugin, and a scanlines plugin.

FireFox Tweak For Speed - For web browsing duh :p. I used THIS (http://www.ubuntugeek.com/speed-up-firefox-web-browser.html) guide for the speed.(that guide works for any distro or os btw)

Cedega - for my windows games that cannot or will not run on just wine 100%.

Wine - To run any of my simple games or programs like notepad++.

Urban Terror - My favorite free FPS game :D.

OpenOffice 3.1 - For homework and such.

Bluefish - This saves so much time on web coding... I love it...

aMSN - For talking to friends over msn :).

I think thats about it >.>.

Firefox - IMO none of the other browsers are as good
Mplayer - Command Line version. All other video players seem sub par once I read the man page to learn the keyboard shortcuts
Vim - Pretty much the same thing as Mplayer. Once I learned it, I can't live without it.
mpd or Amarok - Both good for listening to music. I could live without one of them, but not both
The GIMP - I don't do any advanced Image editing, but I've just become too comfortable with the gimp even for the things I do
