i've been a long time lurker on ubuntuforums.org. i've never even used ubuntu. i can barely pronounce it. however, with the exception of 1 or 2 issues, all the problems i've run into with fedora, compiz, hardware, etc, i've been able to get resolved through this forum. every google search i've used for my problem eventually gets me to a post on this forum that helps me resolve my issue. best linux site ever. it's enough to make me want to wipe out my other system and install ubuntu.

Well, all you are proving is what I always say: That there is no significant difference between the various Linux distributions. The differences are mostly cosmetic.
So, you can wipe your system and install Ubuntu, but why bother? It would be less trouble to just change your desktop background to an Ubuntu one.

I have run Fedora for 4 years myself and still run my file-server and remote access through FC5, but have migrated to Ubuntu for my everyday usage and for any "newbies" that I convert, as overcoming the proprietary drivers and such is a little bit easier here and apt-get is a better app than YUM or whatever you use on Fedora. I always used YUM through CLI.
Just plain easier for a newbie to use. I got by fine on Fedora myself, but most people that I refer into Linux, get by better on Ubuntu so I run it to get familiar.
You are right, both are very similar if you get the differences between deb and rpm based systems.

While FC is nice, just upgrading from my headless server from FC4 to FC5 was such a pain, and I think my system never fully recovered from it. I decided to migrate to GG server, and it seems ok. Having upgraded the FF desktop to GG, I know the experience to upgrade the server version would be just as seamless in the future.
It is only partially true that the differences are cosmetic, On FC, I always ran into the problem of upgrading or installing an application through yum. The dreaded message of "need a later version of X" would sometimes require a person to go through countless iterations of "yum install/upgrade yet-another-package".
I must admit that I do like the way debian packages are installed and managed much better. And I think that is the biggest difference for me.

I agree with this. I've hopped to several distro, including fedora 8.
While on the outside, they look different, but the creamy center is always Linux and no matter what flavor you choose,it will be good.8):wink:

yup. that pretty much sums it up. the only difference i've ever really seen between distros is the installation interface, package management, and subtle differences in directory structures.
true, but the system in question of being wiped out is another windows laptop, not the fedora one. just thought it'd be a change of pace trying out another distro.
