[SOLVED See last entry this thread. Yesterday I saw a short method of installing OpenOffice.org in Ubuntu, now I cannot,
after four hours, find it again. I can find how to install it using Alien...however, the
poster of the short method of installing .deb files did not, if I remember correctly,
use Alien. Does anybody know the short method?
Thanks for any response.

Thanks el_ricardo for the response. That link tells how to use Alien, which I'm trying
to avoid. I've tried that and would prefer using (learning about) the shorter method.

Are you thinking of the checkinstall program? That creates .deb packages from compiled source code.

No, but thanks for trying. The place I saw it must have been in one of the forums
because whoever posted it did so with a highlighted in blue command. I have the
tar ball, have it unpacked, and can see all of the deb packages in the file labeled
OOG680_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9238. I have used Alien in the past to install
these packages but I'm just wanting to use (learn) the shorter method. Thanks again
for the response.

This problem is solved. I finally accurately read the instructions and went to the
folder with the DEBS in it. All is well now.
Thanks to all for your help and advice.
