Sory if this has already come up but I did a search and could not find anything.

Don't know about the British Government but my government speaks great words and don't really follow through..
If GNU/Linux can play a role in getting peopl e "online" and giving them access to pc's, (not sure how actually..) but that's fine.. I know GNU/Linux *can* be a pretty good os for most users.

I don't think every family should have to ensure that their children have computer/internet access, it certainly isn't necessary or even appropriate for everybody. There are people who prefer not to rely on modern technology, and that should be acceptable. People should have a choice as to when their children start using PCs, if at all.

And some children definitely shouldn't be let on the internet full stop.

I sort of agre but think every child should at least be able to ascees a computer at home even if it is just one between a whole fimily I mean you could just get a 8GB EeePC install ubuntu on it for about £250 right (I'll need to check there website).

£250 is quite alot of some families, and then you have the added cost of internet access every month... even if this was paid for by the government as some form of benefit you'd get lots and lots of people complaining how 'unfair' it is that there getting all this free stuff

least we have local library's with internet access for those who dont at home.

I was going to re-read the artical but I can't find it on yahoo but England is not a particularly poor country and I can't remember if it was sujesting everyone has an internet connection but I know someone in my school who does not come from a particularly poor family at all but has neaver used a computer at home or and hardly at all at his old school.
I do think every child should have the opertunity to use a computer I am only 15 my self so I suppose I am a child but I still agree.

i agree that every child should at least have access to computer and internet. even if it is just to get email.
besides with the integration of media, it is going to be a standard that you have internet @home!

I have four children all school age.
Since about 3rd grade all of them have HAD to have internet access in order to complete homework.
In a school dictrict close to me that don't have books after 3rd grade. Every child has a laptop which has all of their books on it.
They get their work via e-mail which they complete and e-mail back to the teacher.
The biggest advantages I see of this is that they only have one item to keep up with and the parents can see how they have exactly done on every single thing that they do.

2 Secondry and 2 Primary
And one who starts nursery later this year.
4 girls and one poor lad.

The older 4 all have their own computers now and all have internet access to some degree.
As mentioned in another thread though...NO social networking, not of the MYSpace variety anyway.
My younger girls are always supervised although we do use a whitelist of sites that is put in place IF me or mum cant sit with them at the time.
My 7 Yr old has used her little Puppy machine for well over a year now and all i`ve ever had to do is upgrade the thing.
Mostly we use *buntu in some way, shape or form though.

I also use Opendns for the porn filtering round the rest of the house for the older two but i dont think we`ve had such a problem in the 2 years we`ve had the things in the home.

All of the machines prior to the new one i`m using now were all rescued from friends, family & neighbors along the way, who`d only bought new ones thinking their old/er ones were beyond hope,or indeed because thats what they`d been advised by some unscrupulous "pc repair guy"......tch tch:)

They`ve all had/have my full support with their shiney new XP/Vista machines so i have "paid" in some way. It`s their kids who need some supervision me thinks but thats down to the parents of course.
All machines though were upgraded with new hardware and of course Linux. All machines generally ended up running better than the new ones the previous owners had replaced them with:popcorn:

What can you say eh......some very mythed locals when they`ve been round here and seen their old machines in action

I dont think the kids could be much safer online though and i know the pc`s could`nt be any better protected from the kids themselves.:)

I'm worried about how much MS will exploit this new development. In my eyes, it's the equivalent of the government demanding that every household should have a newspaper to read - of course, the most popular media companies would be screaming with joy at that.

Cool nice idea.
I've sort of done the same thing with my sisters old laptop wich she gave to me because every time she tried to boot it it came up with a blue sceen. In the end I fixed it with Ubuntu and she got anoyed because I would not give it back.

Ahhhh......siblings:lolflag:
I actually (now)prefer the owners at least give me an evening with the old ones before they go buying new over some silly "non-issue",as i call them.

I`ve just acquired yet another lost seeming cause, although the owner is not waiting to see if i can fix it before buying a new one as he will just give this one to his kids.
It`s an old Sony Vaio PCG-GRX316MP which was powering up ok but the display was doing nothing......no bios screen,no nothing.
It also was not charging the battery.

Removed the Power Button panel and found that the two ribbon cables beneath it had been damaged by whomever had previously "tested" it and stuck the obligatory "Warranty Void if seal broken" stickers over the screw holes on the bottom.

The power button ribbon was folded at right angles to reach the mobo port, which seems like a bit of a design flaw imho as that fold is where the tiny break is on that particular ribbon.
I managed to cut back the ribbon to the broken fold then managed to strip enough plastic off the end to replace the ribbon into the mobo port, power up and have the battery charging now.
The other ribbon, linked to the display i think,is completely mashed and not actually long enough to trim down.
The actual contact points on this second ribbon are all pushed back and touching each other.

Whoever replaced it must have just rammed it in and it mashed the contact points.
The current owner(?) says that the lappy has always had issues where it would sometimes work fine....but sometimes power up with no display,as well as never having a charged battery.
He acquired it second hand from his old place of work when they upgraded all their machines as far as i understand.

I`m no expert of course but even a "just try it and see" guy like myself can tell what obviously happened to the ribbons the last time the machine was "tested",back in 2005,according to the stickers on the bottom.
The current owner has never opened any part of it since acquiring it so it dont leave tooo much to the imagination eh

I`m going to order a couple of new ribbons but the one thing that really has me stumped is the VGA port on the back...........
I would have thought one of our monitors might work from that, even though it`s own tft display wont but it`s a no go.

If i get it working the owner is obviously getting it back of course but if i cant then i will make sure he gets something sorted for himself and his kids
He can only really afford a new "Vista CAPABLE" type machine but he now knows it would probably need a RAM upgrade to bring it up to speed as it were.

He`s a happy XP user so he would actually prefer that i think.
I could mention Linux of course but unless he(they?) ask me then i never really mention it in that way...

If anybody knows if a separate monitor should still work from the VGA port even though the Laptop display and/or ribbon/s are kaput like this would be doing all concerned a big favor me thinks :-?
I`m wondering IF it`s something else just because of that??
I might replace these ribbons and still have no display of any sort.

I know it`s not a support thread & kinda OT but it will be a kids laptopO:)

Wow! That never happens in other countries! ](*,) (I'm kidding, of course. It probably just proves that people and governments are more alike than different.)
