if you prowl the linux forums you see things that make bill seem like a blood sucking vampire. but honestly, this shows hes a funny guy, and ontop of that hes a great man with good business sense, sure it may go against alot of the open source things but hes just protecting his investments, like any of us would do

look up his charity work, hes good, end of story

Their 35 billion dollar charity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_and_Melinda_Gates_Foundation#The_Warren_Buffe tt_donation) says a lot.

Absolutely, Mr. and Mrs. Gates are great to the world over. Gates leaving Microsoft will only bring good things to the world. No matter if you hate the guy/microsoft or not.

I saw an interview on the news early this morning. He said something about wanting more time for family and charity work.

Yes he is a great person. I wish there were more people in the world like him and his wife. He is a great business man, and took advantage of the situation in the PC industry at the time. I can't fault him for trying to build his monopoly, but is it time to take it down.

The man is undoubtably a genius. It will be a shame to see him go, fortunatetly we still have steve balmer to take over the mantle of evil overlord.

Atleast Bill can finally come out and tell people that he's been using linux all these years!

Strange last year they said that was his last keynote. I am suprised people are so easily fooled by giving to charity at the end to appear good at the very end.

This common strategy was employed by the robber barrons like J.D Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnagie who gave a lot of wealth to charity at the end to make up for their past crimes which were substantial.

What are bill gate's crimes? Would it be better that he didn't give money to charity? Aside from the charity work have you seen the amount of money that he has given to help the advancement od science?

*ehem..netscape*.

but its a graceful exit, he knew 2008 is the empires most vulnerable time, MS is no longer invincible.

When's Balmer retiring? The sooner the better.

Whatever, I think he was great contributer to the computer world though his methods were questioned a lot. He managed to make Windows a very successful product, he also managed to end the dominance of Netscape. Let's see how Microsoft can carry on after his exit!

Aside from the fact that Mr. Gates is responsible for a lot of wrongdoing, I think there are some things that we need to be aware of before we start nominating him for the Nobel Prize!

First, he's not "giving all his money to charity." In 2005, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation had a $35 billion endowment. It donated $1.4 billion, a fraction of its actual funding. The rest of the money goes to investments, in order to maintain the foundation.

Second, they have been accused of being ethically irresponsible with their investments. See this LA Times article (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-gatesx07jan07,0,6827615.story?coll=la-home-headlines) for more information.

Just letting you all know what's going on!

all his stuff per year hes been giving out for over a decade, and even if its only 1.4 billion, do you under stand how much that is, type it out with zeros 1,400,000,000$.

and define ethically irresponsible. if you know about the stock market youd know that for higher returns on investment you take stocks with a slow steady increase, and high risk stocks for quick money return.

and its not like just a lump sum, its money going out all the time

he has done alot of things that are debtrimental to the open source community but if you say youd do different youre a liar

video was funny, although it was funny how they didnt show the BSOD in the daily show clip, or make any real diggs, i mean a linux/apple joke would have been funny, even a BSOD.

While his charity work is good, hes computing work isnt, you cant defend one with the other!
sure hes good at lying and marketing but hes done NOTHING for computing, were burdend with a horible arch (even macs now), a horrible market and just about nothing else!

The article I linked to (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-gatesx07jan07,0,6827615.story?coll=la-home-headlines) accused his foundation's investments of being ethically irresponsible because they were investing in irresponsible companies, whose agendas and methods directly contradicted the good he was trying to do. Like buying shares in oil companies that were polluting the same, small African villages where he was paying for immunizations.

And if I were in charge of Microsoft, they'd have released their first Linux distro by now. ^.^

There's a difference between competing by making good products, and competing by trying to kill off the competition by any means necessary.
