Most ebooks now being sold are either Adobe Digital Edition, Microsoft Reader or MobiPocket formats. None of these formats are supported in Ubuntu or any other linux distro. Adobe and MobiPocket each promise, promise to support it in the future but in the end nada.

Makes me wonder who is pulling their strings.

Anyone else ticked off and want to vent or commiserate with me?

Why, in the end, nada? That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

I do too, but living overseas leaves little real choice. The prices here are really up there. Shipping costs from US have also become prohibitive.

Check out ereader.com. They have a large number of ebooks and the windows version of their software works well with Wine. Firefox works well for purchasing and downloading the ebooks

Thanks Dennis!

ereader.com software indeed installed without problem under wine.

Will give them a try but looks pretty good and they have titles that I'm interested in.

Cheers!

google has a book reader I have not used it but you might have some luck there http://www.google.com/reader/view/?hl=en&tab=wy#directory-welcome-page

with android on the horizon companies are going to be in a race to make a linux based reader so hold tight.

Is palm e reader compatable? Palm is a linux distro... is it not?

Strangely enough, the Amazon.com kindle is reportedly linux based. Wonder if their sw could somehow be used with ubuntu.

In any case is wonderful that at least ereader.com with or without thinking about it provides decent service that can be used with wine. A few million prospective customers should help them succeed.
