And don't say Kubuntu because thats a freakin disaster. I thought about freespire but if it's ubuntu based it's probably as bad

why not debian, with KDE? you can select it in the install!

You could always go with Just Debian. I think the latest release is 4.0. Be a good idea to brush up on your shell skills.

What does Kubuntu do, or not do, that you need/don't want in a desktop? Maybe that'll help us give you a better suggestion?

Its going to be hard to recommend one to you without knowing what you think is a disaster in Kubuntu. Give us something more to work with.

yeah I heard debian is a real challange to configure. Not as user friendly as Ubuntu is this true

Maybe it's specific to my pc but it's really slow and buggy half the times when I click on things the little icon starts bouncing up and down and then disappears but the app never opens. my wireless card it wouldn't let me use the wireless card it would see other networks but would get hung when connecting to them right now I'm using Ubuntu and Mandriva they are fast I have had no bugs and everything works really great Ubuntu is Great but I like KDE Mandriva is great but I like debian

if you used to using ubuntu, you'll barely notice any difference to debian tbh

That is why you need to know your shell scripting language well. Get to know Ubuntu and the terminal. You have to crawl before you can walk. If you think that Kubuntu is hard, there is no way you can use the scripts in Debian.

Ok,the best Ive found so far are Klikit (stable release this month).
And Mepis7.
http://www.mepislovers.org/forums/index.php
Klikit is based off Kbuntu and Mepi7s is off Debian,Etch,I think...Don't quote me on that.
http://loscompanion.com/forums/index.php
Check out the forums for both, ask questions and get the live disks and see what you think....Both are KDE.
I'm using Mepis 7 right now.
Report back in and there will be a test next Wed.

Here's something you might find useful:

and also this:

That's how I got started.

Here's another thing. You can run KDE under the Ubuntu frame. Just install the K Desktop and run it under Ubuntu. I did that for a while. You have the option of running Gnome or KDE, even at the same time. But, that can get confusing. If you don't understand this, write back.

Sidux. Tried many different distros and this one finally stuck. I've finally gotten over the constant looking for the perfect distro :D

Sidux is really just debian unstable (not unstable as in crashes all the time but unstable as in packages are often updated) so it's 100% compatible with debian. To me it's the perfect balance. It does a lot for you (automounting usb drives for instance) but not too much which is annoying. It does more for you then debian but it's still only free software so you might have some tinkering to do.

Best feature is the smxi script (smxi in terminal) that does the upgrading for you. Just install Sidux and then first thing you do is run smxi and it will upgrade everything to bleeding edge. It can also do a lot of other things as well such as installing ati/nvidia drivers.

Edit: beat me to it Incense.

Yes, but you were much more eloquent with your explanation.:)

Check out Mepis 7.0 at http://www.mepis.org.

Very polished, not buggy like Kubuntu and Debian-based (as of 7.0).

It has excellent hardware detection and was the only one to get my wireless connected (with WPA!) while running from a Live CD!

In my opinion, it's a very underestimated distro.

I hate to see Mepis losing popularity lately. My wish would be that all the effort that is put into Kubuntu could go into Mepis - if both would merge, this would only benefit the KDE Linux world.

I agree with you there,100 %....Or even better,Mepis and Klikit...
Wow! That would be a serious distro!

I installed mepis and I'm giving it a try everything works nice so far no problems yet. The repos seem to be a little small compiz-fusion was added yesterday, and emerald isn't in there at all I got it installed by manualy adding some packages from sanes repo still got somethings to work out with emerald it's causing some problems with apps opening blank I minamize then restore and there not blank any more. other than that I'm enjoying the experience so far. I'm going to give sidux a try to

PC Linux OS has a great rep :)

PCLOS is my current favorite, but it is rpm based - not Debian.

To the OP: I was concerned about this when I made the switch from Kubuntu because I had never really "stepped out of the Debian box", so to speak, but I didn't really have any issues. The repo is good, and it uses apt-get and synaptic to install stuff, much like the *buntu's. It might be worth a look if your primary concern is having a good KDE distro.
