I decided recently that as I am no longer a student I should probably start paying for my music so I was wondering whether anyone knows of any good music download sites.

-Mp3 only (for sake of compatability with different players etc)
-No DRM or any labelling stuff (I want to be able to make a mix cd for my girl friend with out getting sued)
-Small indie web sites would be cool as well as any decent mainstream sites.

Thanks in advance!

Jamendo (http://www.jamendo.com/en/)! I always get music from there. It's free, too. Then there's Magnatune (http://magnatune.com/), which offers both CDs and various formats of audio files, but you have to pay for it there.

I have the perfect solution for you.
I use http://www.mp3fiesta.com/ for buying my music, I have read all of the legal documents, checked out the certificate and everything and the site seems legal. All the music is really cheap, an album is about $1.
theres also www.mp3stor.com but I havent used it and dont like it becuase it makes you create an account with third parties but the prices are the same and it supports more credit card types than mp3fiesta.

I haven't explored this very in-deep, but the creativecommons site has an audio section (http://creativecommons.org/audio) (I downloaded a couple of electronic tracks some months ago from SectionZ, but I just went to their site and it says "copyright 2008" so I'm not sure if I can post the link here).

We have a great site in Norway called Urørt (http://www11.nrk.no/urort/default.aspx)(the"ø" is a funny Norwegian/Danish letter) and it is great, the best artist even get air-time on national radio. The setback is that it don't seem to be in English version:(
