haha... I did notice that you'd been pretty quiet recently. I think Loke's been posting fewer walls as well. Mostly comments.

A new one with awesome2.1 (THE WM OF DOOM bwah ha ha).

edit: it's fuzzy cos i had to resize it. Its not actually like that.

How'd you get awesome-client to work at all? I tried updating a while back but ended up going back because I couldn't get the statusbar to work at all.

This is what I copy paste into the terminal to get a statusbar text up and running:

echo 0 widget_tell mpd "[MPD: `mpc | sed -n '1p'`] " | /usr/local/bin/awesome-client
echo 0 widget_tell bat " :: [Bat: `sh 'readbattery.sh'`] :: [`date '+%H:%M'`]" | /usr/local/bin/awesome-client

And I have textboxes called mpd and bat in my .awesomerc.

This is just a temporary solution however, since the statuxtext doesn't update itself this way. :D

He's been quiet lately. He is on 11, with 23 posts.

Here is an update on my latest desktop. I've made the Pekwm theme lighter, and changed the buttons a little.

Details: Pekwm 0.1.6 with a modified Japan Pekwm theme, modified Dandelion theme, nuoveXT-1.6 icons, Sans fonts and a wallpaper from customize.org. Applications running are conky, netwmpager, fbpanel (screenshot 1) and thunar (screenshot 2).

Feedback is welcome.

2 things: You desktop looks great, and you are listening to Psalters which is totally awesome music!

It's different in 2.1 than it was in 2.0. For starters, you need a widget in your ~/.awesomerc, like so:

textbox mpd
{
text = "-" #the - will be replaced by mpd playing
}

Then, I put this in /usr/bin/awesome-monitor:

while true
do
echo 0 widget_tell mpd "[MPD: `mpc | sed -n '1p'`] :: `mpc | grep "#" | cut -c 1-9`" | /usr/local/bin/awesome-client
sleep 1
done
And in ~/.xinitrc...

...
/usr/bin/awesome-monitor &
...

Someone, recommend me a WM/DE. I've used:

Gnome
Openbox
Fluxbox
XFCE
KDE
KDEMod

I'm not really looking for any tilers. Something very customizable, pretty, and maybe a bit of eye candy wouldn't hurt.

However, you can use floating layouts just as well in awesome/dwm as well though..

Try FVWM if you want it to be very configurable, but don't mind spending quite some time mastering the configuration files :)

If you like Openbox and Fluxbox, try Pekwm. I like it a lot more than Fluxbox (it has tabs, but no native transparency, though), and it has most of the things I like in Openbox. It has a few rough edges (the harbour (dock or slit) isn't very polished, as the developers admit), but it is quite configurable and it has very good documentation.

It doesn't have a great guide, at least not that I know. There is a fvwm forum (http://fvwm.lair.be/), but that's about it. So, yeah, pretty much jumping in head first. Be prepared for frustration. :-)

Fvwm-crystal (http://fvwm-crystal.org/) gives you some basic setups. It is a nice way to start, but if you want anything else besides the standards it gives, you will encounter frustration again...

Not to discourage you, though. ;-) I no longer have fvwm installed, but I once managed to make it do more or less what I wanted (which is fairly minimalistic). You can start with a recipe you like somewhat and then edit away.

Pekwm is a lot easier, though.

it should be as it ships with Vista,

Microsoft had a new range for Vista, all can be googled

Thanks. The font is from, ahem, vista. Not sure how legal it is to pull it from vista and install it in ubuntu but I'm shedding any tears for ms. If you don't have access to a vista disk I can probably PM or email the fonts. Not sure if they are available "in the wild".

EDIT according to the wikipedia page you can get them from the powerpointless viewer.

You know, it's rare for me to find GNOME any attractive. Xfce just feels a lot more flexible for a GTK-based DE. But your desktop is pretty interesting. Looks comfortable, something I could stick to for some time (I'd just have to switch some of the icons of that time, perhaps... I don't have a life of my own, you see), and yes, congrats for the nice, balanced use of the green color. It's fresh.

So, is that one of those clock wallpapers, like those in the VladStudio website?

Ah, thank you very much. I didn't know about the widget stuff, but I think I see some cool things that could be done with it. I might try out the newer version again when I get some time.

I feel like a post ***** for doing this, considering I only did two minor changes, but now it really feels "complete" so here you go.

Same as before in all regards, except I changed to Banshee instead of Exaile (sorry, the playlist feature on Banshee is just niiiice), and upgraded how much system info gets displayed on my little widget there). I also scrapped the weather thing because, c'mon. I don't really need to know what it's like outside. I'm in Pittsburgh. It's January. It's COLD. :lolflag:

They WERE, anyway. Nothing after Americana really clicked, I don't think. But for the early/mid 1990s? Definitely the kings. I still rank "The Kids Aren't Alright" as amongst the best punk songs ever (yeah, I know, Offspring aren't "true punk", whatever). And anyone who says Smash isn't a friggin' excellent album is a liar.

It's XFCE, with a slightly edited version of the GTK theme found in this post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4192168&postcount=952). The window borders are Cobble (http://lokheed.deviantart.com/art/Cobble-29569009), the font used is called MgOpenCosmetica (http://www.ellak.gr/fonts/mgopen/index.en.html).

The wallpaper is from this thread, too, and can be found here. (http://customize.org/wallpapers/51314)

The browser's Firefox, the MSN program's called emesene (http://emesene.org/trac/wiki/WikiStart) and the clock is plain old Conky.

Sure. The GTK theme is glasa (i think i got it from gnome-art) and the emerald theme is http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Emerald+Glass+theme?content=70442, I just made the borders a little larger.

How did you get your network manager signal strength to look shiny like that?

that's actually what's left of KDE in my computer :) I think knetworkmanager is much superior, and nm-applet's icons are just horrible (same goes for akregator and liferea)

I feel flattered :D Yes, that's a wallpaper clock from Vladstudio. There is a screenlet in Gnome-look (called WallpaperClock, convenient) that makes this compatible with Linux.

I actually used XFCE, but I decided to move to Gnome because I found the mix of big and small icons on the desktop interesting, and because it's much more supported in terms of daemons, notifications, and general integration.

Of course, it's lovely. ;)

I definitly recomend using kdemod on arch if u liek kde, it's so much faster then a normal kde install, and totally worth it. As for the domino config and color scheme, they are posted in this thread, some other guy made;

I'm looking for a way to replace the menu from fbpanel - I got used to it but I just hate it's GTK integration (why can't it follow the theme's panel style?..)
Is there a way to make OpenBox menu be like fbpanel's? That is, it updates itself with newly installed apps and places them under certain categories?

I'm getting lazy :D

oi, the evil evil desktop threads... oh how i love thee...
First, i jump from kde to fluxbox... then from fluxbox back to kde.
Now, from kde either back to fluxbox or quite possibly Awesome or XMonad
Any suggestions or advice on those two... i've never messed with them, but their tiling aspects make them great possibilities (my desktops tend to rely on a series of apps run in individual transparent borderless terminals themed around whatever walpaper i pick for the time being)

Ill be sure to post a pic once i get something whipped together, this could be fun... again :P

Nice!

Which fonts are you using?

sans-7 for awesome, and the Lucida fonts for mostly everything else.

i am in love... :) just got my new lappy... running vanilla ubuntu cuz i really don't have time to fiddle right now... but i would love to have something like this... i guess you have managed to "hit-the-spot" as far as i am concerned

Thanks!

New one. :)
I was inspired while I was experimenting with closeup photography.

Themes: Again a standard Ubuntu theme with the selected color changed

http://www.screenlets.org/index.php/Home
First install the screenlets core package (instructions and files on the site) then download screenlets you want that aren't included in the core package and install them in your ~/.screenlets directory (or /usr/local/share/screenlets if you want others users could access them).

Thanks for the comments so far.

What about the Debian menu? See here (http://icculus.org/openbox/index.php/Help:Menus#The_Debian_menu) for details.

Sure. The GTK theme is glasa (i think i got it from gnome-art) and the emerald theme is http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Emerald+Glass+theme?content=70442, I just made the borders a little larger.

Thanks for the info. I looked on gnome art without luck but found this (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Glasa+%2B+Glasa-Pro?content=70893&PHPSESSID=b0150e867787989a7c821771564002aa) on gnome-look. It has the same name but not the same look. Is this it but just tweaked or totally wrong.

Also, do you know if emerald themes work with compiz? I've never tried and not sure how to use them...if you can.

Thanks again.

It's the same theme :) maybe using a different setup than the screenshots makes it look different. Yes, emerald themes work with compiz fusion. Emerald remained unchanged since Beryl and Compiz joined forces

Thank you! Could you also give the background for Kicker?
And yes, for now I'm on Ubuntu... I guess I'm afraid of ruining what is already working fine... Hehe. But I really am interested in ArchLinux...

And Mariachi, I loved your desktop. Very classy, elegant and soft. And those panel colors really give it a great touch.

Really, when you have a day free just do a reinstall of arch, you really wont regret it, It's not really that hard to set up either jsut, takesa little know how. The kicker bg is from Baco, you can download it here;

Do you know if Kazehakase can also use those styles? I wanted to use a darker theme on another computer, but the clash between a dark interface and a white google/gmail/youtube/whatever just hurts my eyes...

haha man.. i remember using Kazehakase back in the day.. light as all get out lol
Those specific ones are using stylish to do that, but they can be loaded as userscripts for greasemonkey too, so really you only need that one. I'm pretty sure you can't get the greasemonkey extension to work in Kaz.
there could be a way to get the javascripts to load manually, but it would be beyond my technical know how lol

does it have settable preferences like firefox's 'about:config'? or any configuration files?
if so, maybe you could make your own option that changes the background color of google to gray with a line or two of CSS..
is this (http://userstyles.org/styles/4132) what your thinking of?

I use them with Epiphany. Epiphany has a (singe) custom stylesheet, and I copied all the userstylesheets I want to use in there, one after another. If kazehakase has a custom stylesheet somewhere, perhaps they'll work there as well.

Different types of colorblind. I see different colors, not just black/white/gray.

What I meant was, if someone was red-gereen color blind, do red and green look the same - like a shade of gray or like the same shade of red or green? My desktop was all orange and red. Would it look like shades of gray or shades of some other color that isn't orange or red? Looking over the wikipedia page, it seems to suggest that the colors of my desktop would be shifted to darker, more similar hues but there are too many variations to get a clear picture. Guess that's getting way off topic but it's interesting.

el mariachi
January 27th, 2008, 07:20 PM
depending on your type of colorblindness you can see different colors, shades of gray, or you simply don't know the name of the color you are seeing :s (happens to me, with some colors - I don't have issues coordinating them though - although I prefer to have everything in strong colors or contrasting colors, so I do know which ones they are.)

#end of offtopic :D (if anyone wants to discuss this further, just start a thread in the Cafe or something - let me know :D

Well, I finally uploaded some of my gtk-2.0 themes to Gnome-Looks.org and Xfce-Looks.org,

I also uploaded the xfwm4 window theme and the gtkrc-2.0 for the xfce4 panel.

What's up with your Glossy Green theme? I can't drag and drop it into the appearance window, "the file format is invalid". I'm guessing it's because it's a .tar instead of a .tar.gz.

Just download it into the /tmp folder, then unpack with "Extract Files with full path" checked, and "Overwrite" checked... so you now end up having a folder in /tmp called: /tmp/74133-GlossyGreen

Then open that folder and you'll see the GlossyGreen folder. Then in root, move or copy that to your /usr/share/themes folder.

cd /tmp/74133-GlossyGreen

-then

sudo cp -r GlossyGreen /usr/share/themes

-or

sudo mv GlossyGreen /usr/share/themes

Now it should show with all of your other themes.

I'm missing a conky setup, not sure what I want to use so I've left that out.

Is there anything that will could help make my desktop more visually stimulating?

I would say a more active or bright wallpaper (just because I find patterns like that kind of boring).
Just my opinion, though :)

How about converting a regular wallpaper from a smaller size to SVG and then use it in any size you need?

Yep. I've checked out everything from DeviantArt, Mandolux, and just about every other multi/dual display website.

I've never tried, but I doubt they'd scale very well. ;)

It's not a gnome icon theme. It's just a collection of source icons. I'm working on turning it into a theme though, but then I'll have to get the necessary permissions before "releasing" it.

I'm already using the Fall theme myself! It's so comfortable, and there's that orange in the middle of the dark gray that looks red now and then, with the dark areas looking like bluer tones... The whole effect is just delicious! I love red or orange hints!

Now, just a question. The tabs in most Clearlooks themes have a shadow, sort of a darker fade in the upper border. I believe I already saw Clearlooks themes with a solid colored bar in the top of the tabs instead, no blurring, so my question is: where in the gtkrc file can we switch that? Or is it an engine feature, so no choice?

I know that the Murrine engine draws the themes that way, and so does the Clearlooks Classic.

You might want to check out the Murrine themes that have the nice buttons and the tabs with the stripes: http://www.cimitan.com/pages/murrine.php

yup, that's nice. the themes you've chosen make those icons seem a little more mysterious and a little less goofy.
