setting default value in MySQL

I know I've done this before, but now I can't seem to find the syntax for it. How do I set a default value in MySQL?

And while I'm asking, how do you do those official Thank Yous? I've seen them and I'd like to thank people, but I don't know how to do it.

Nevermind, I was using parathesis and none are needed after MODIFY.
