so... after completely filling 1.5TB worth of RAID 5 with various videos i've been cutting together i've bought 3 1TB drives and RAID5'd them into my file server.

So, i'm staring into a 2TB void of freshly formatted space. my question to you people is, what to do with it(while i have plenty of free space, i got an HD video camera for christmas its going to go pretty fast). anything cool but utterly pointless i could do with it? i've already made win98 'splode with the sheer size of it.

as for the torrents(deluge > utorrent) and frostwire, i don't think so.

1/ crappy connection(this is the biggest reason)

2/ i'm not pirating anything, i haven't actually pirated anything since i switched to linux, i've never needed to.

the ultra multi boot thing sounds good. i might try that, also give me a chance to put torrent into use.

any more suggestions before i partition the hell out of this thing?

Do you have all your CD's, ripped into flac?

I have about 40 hours of music right now that takes up 15gb. You get about 2.66 hours of music per GB in FLAC. You can have about 5400hours of music in FLAC.

I plan on trying to get to 1tb of stuff on my computer. I am only using 37.4gb out of 300. My family has 300 records, and I have a nice sound card. I may try ripping them at DVD quality.

sounds like the kind of thing i'd like to keep and would thus result in me buying an even bigger set of drives(should be up to 4TB SSD's by then hopefully).

sigh, i remember when 10GB was an unfillable void. should probably sue the company that sold me that PC, salesman said 'i guarantee you'll never use this much space' now i've filled it 200 times over and going for 400 :P

They cost about £500 along with however much the RAID card was but i had that around anyway from a recent cannibalization.

they are all SATAII's these in fact (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135132) but from different stores to reduce chances of consecutive failures.

and yes, the only reason i pirated with windows was because some of my legitimately purchased software(microsoft flight simulator's 1,2 and 3, MS office and occasionaly windows itself) refused to work and i was denied a refund. so i pirated a copy and it worked perfectly so i used that.

if i want to see a movie i go to the cinema, if i like a band, i'll buy their CD.

if it became insanely expensive to do either(i'd say its borderline just now) i would consider pirating again but then i'm adicted to Jamendo just now.

err, the drives are clean of junk. thats why i bought new ones.

i delayed buying them for as long as possible but they were full and so was th HD on my video camera so i needed to dump the files before new years.

the new array now has all ubuntu flavours both official and unofficial along with arch, open solaris, mepis, and Fedora core 7.

i tried mint but it didn't work. screen was all screwed up with it.

how do i format a partition in ext4 (i assume its more complicated than a tune2fs -some_magic_option) thing like it was to go from ext2 to ext3.

Do you have a lot of movies on DVD? You could rip them into the drives, and have movies whenever you need them. I do not know how you would do that in Ubuntu.

Maybe you can do something strange like set a camera to take a picture of your front yard every 5 minutes. After a year or so you can put them all together into a cool video.

again i'll emphasize i have a crappy connection. i am seeding ubuntu 7.10, arch-ftp and stealthis movie parts 1 and 2 never the less. i don't intend to seed more.

aslo, i have done something ultra sadistic, i have installed several versions of windows. 98SE, ME and XP(all the ones i legally own) just to see what would happen. this was purely out of interest of seeing how older crappy operating systems would cope with modern hardware not because of any fanboyness.

98 spazzed out when i gave it full run of the array, so it is now in a little 10GB partition ME was just as bad and is in a similar partition. XP coped with it but didn't play nice, there was much thrashing. so thats in a little 40GB off by tself as well.

just need to get drivers for 98 and ME lol.

i also have a few more distros installed. even minix(doesn't work too well).
