The operating system is Windows Vista, though...

Not necessary with the Eee PC, though.

I'm just saying the title is a bit misleading, as it invites a direct comparison, when the two laptops are quite different from one another, not just in high/low specifications.

Agreed, but it could be perfect for someone who wants an ultra portable at the same time high spec. It's not exactly apples and oranges, more like green apples and red apples

No way I'll ever buy a whole vista license.

I just got my Eee 2G today for 200£. as 4G were out of stock

8Gb one is about 300£ therefore folwoing the pattern I guess the new one 32GB should be no extra than 400£.

I found another good one for 400£ range but don't want to spend that much for ultra portables. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/133791

It'll be more as this is targeted towards people who want luxury. It has a 11.1" screen as opposed to a 7" and it also has a faster cpu and a few other extras as well. It's going to be quite a lot more expensive

after one year you never know how much competition will drive prices down as it happened with ordinary laptops dropped down more than half within a year. i would look at the falling market rather than the rising one when considering ultra portable notebooks.

i can see new market emerging with XO and ASUS leading till some other taps in between.

Prices?

Not a clue. You will have to check local websites for that.
Must say I like the look of the U1F.

Edit: I don't think it has a SSD though which would be cool to boot the OS from.

Prices?

Probably three to five times the price of an Eee?

I agree. Last time I checked the price of a 32GB SSD (by itself) it was over £800. Prices are falling quick but it's still very high.

It looks like a pretty big jump from the smaller 4G-type versions and the 32G version, although I like the idea of a small, low-cost ultra portable. I have a pocket pc I spent $350 on a couple years ago and even the lowest end of the Asus machines under discussion blows it out of the water in terms of performance and what you can do on it.

I may end up buying one when my pocket PC dies. My current lappy is great but a 15" desktop replacement machine isn't exactly "portable".

the U series is around ~1700-2000 dollars like most ultraportables.

The eeepc (not sure how many e's to add) is more like the next generation of palm pilots it is only about twice the size but much more usable.

I got one last weekend and I'm in love with it. Perfect for reading my eeeBooks (couldn't resist) and practise on the shell (trying to learn bash).

One what? An Asus eet or these new ones that come infested with vista?

I got a palm z22 for christmas, mostly because in my country there were no signs of things like the Asus eet, but this z22 was fairly inexpensive and I am exploiting it for ebooks, I needed virtual box to use the adobe reader for it which is very sad though.
