Does providing a link in a part message, signature etc. do anything? I'm curious.

Yes, people see, some people click it. 4 of the top 5 incoming hits on my site are from forums. I've not seen the stats yet from the link in my sig here on ubuntuforums because I added it there too recently.

Based on my statistics, my wiki (no blog) gets a lot of hits.

I have a program that logs who comes, from where, and when. The log has the exact link they clicked on and I get hits from all over the forum.

I sometimes go to the links, just out of curiosity.

Sorry, for the lack of poll. I just worked out how to add one now,

I click them. I've found (and banned) some really sneaky spammers that way, selling stuff to make certain body parts larger, to make them work better, or to buy their really cheap consumer electronics. Yeah, I click every one I see.

We are more than happy to allow users to have a link in their sig to a personal (non-profit, spam) site, and even happier if it is somehow linux/Ubuntu or at least computer related. You can even have a discreet link to a personal business site or as a referral, like to your web host, as long as it isn't typical spam or done in an obnoxious manner.

I consider it spamming, mostly.
I don't read blogs - why would I ?.
If a link in a sig looks informational and interesting (eg 'what is a troll', "learn programming'? .. ) I don't consider it spam, and I will occasionally click them, but the "my blog", "read my blog", "read my blog too" type, or MySpace and the likes, no thanks.

+1, although I don't consider it spam per se.

I definately don't go to random blogs and never MySpace.

Some of the members here have good blogs on Linux and such, so I will go to theirs. Often you get tips on customizing, hardware issue work arounds, and howtos.

well, maybe not spam per se, but possibly a cheap form of SEO ?

I browse ubuntuforums with signatures and avatars disabled. So I see nothing.

I always click links in people's signatures, and find their blogs that way. I like to read other people's blogs :)

out of my site - i've gotten a lot of hits, when i see the getclicky stats with freewebs, i plan on if i can putting up a page for reviews or something another :) so I can get what people think of it. The only way someone will see ur site is if u advertise it, links, telling, etc.. So try to link it to where ever u can but not in an obtrusize way.

Hey! I am not first anymore. Please don't make any more posts on your blog. :)

I usually only link the Stanford site for Folding at Home in my signatures, if I do so at all. I consider it low-key non-profit advertising.

I click on links to helpful stuff, not really interested in other people's opinions and drama, TYVM.

I click on them if they look interesting or I want to find out more about that person. Otherwise, they just get ignored.

I really don't think they fall under spam. They are very discrete and easy to ignore, so I don't really mind what they put there. Unless it is misleading or too big or colorful. As long as its not distracting from the post I don't mind.

Spam is different, that would be posting "Hey look at the link in my sig" when it is off-topic or repeatedly. Or posting links just to promote them regardless of the relevance to the site or topic. This is where there is more of a fine line. Someone making a thread saying "Hey check out my new blog about Linux and give me some feedback" is not spam to me, unless they post it multiple times. But like having a reply in an unrelated thread saying that would be spam. And posting "Click here to get more excitement and size in your life!" is nearly always spam.

Links in the sig really don't fall under spam, though they can be inappropriate in many ways,

When I am in a commercial forum (particularly if I am moderating such), I will take offense to someone advertising a competing forum in their signature.

The only ones I readily click on are my own since they are mainly for me.

The only reason i can get to my blog now is since it is in my sig otherwise I would forget.
