Umm...use it to watch DVDs?

And I'm guessing the DivX compatibility is so that you can burn any DivX files you might have onto a data disc and watch them straight on your TV, without having to worry about converting them to DVD video format.

What is the spec of the DVD player, or model name?
Normally, there cheap players use proprietary ASIC, no opensource hack available.

I doubt if you can "install" any open source programs. You can try watching divx (.avi) files with subtitles (.srt), which are most of the time open source files.

To what end? It's a DVD player - what else were you wanting to do with it, besides watch DVDs?

What I mean is that .srt (subtitle) files are the freebies, not the .avi's.
