Could someone point me to a service which gives you root access to a unix/linux box? I am searching google but can not come up with one that seems taking the time to sign up for. I'd like to get a good one on the first try :)

If you want root access you'll need a VPS or dedicated server. No sane shell host is going to give you root access

I am starting to think how a server would look if it gave free root/sudo access from just signing up. That would be the nightmare #1 for administrators.

I agree with what everybody else is saying. Sadly, there are way too many evil people out there for any sane host to give root access. However, there are hosts that give shell access, like DreamHost (that's what I've been using for about two years now). Indeed, SSH/SFTP is a very legitimate alternate to FTP, and you will probably see more hosts offering SSH/SFTP access as they deprecate the latter.

I know about a year or so ago I signed up on a site that said it gave root access. I did use it. I have no idea what the site was called though. I am now trying out: http://sdf.lonestar.org/index.cgi

[EDIT] - sorry, didn't see that word 'free' - good luck with that

Try a Linode (http://www.linode.com/) - US$20 per month for your own (virtual) machine.
They give an excellent service, I've had mine nearly a year now.
You get your choice of linux OS - including Ubuntu.

IBM is giving root shells of S/390's:

Had one myself. It's rather nice.
They have SLES 10.
