I realise it's a joke but it's not the same. If there were seven different versions of Ubuntu (not including different architectures), then it would be comparable :)

if you count ubuntu as a 'version' of Debian, then it makes sense.

Heh, I knew I should have used Slackware as the example :)

You have probably heard this one before but...

How many Microsoft employees does it take to screw in a light bulb?
None, they declare darkness a new standard.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I even use it as my signature at some other forums.

Saying ubuntu is just a version of debian is like saying windows 98 is just a version of MS-DOS.

SUre, its built around it, but its completly different.

ANd the difference between 7 vistas and 100 linuxes is the seven vistas are basically the same thing. The linuxes are very different... From debian to fedora core, to ubuntu to vector, they are all maintained by different people and are different operating systems.

Well, XP Has what... 4? Starter, Home, Pro, and Pro Corporate.

Touché, I guess Windows also has CE, PE and then there are all the various embedded versions... :D

Still, no Linux distro is this fragmented, sure there are forks like Ubuntu from Debian and the various distro's based on Slackware and so on. but you don't get Ubuntu Starter Edition, Home Basic Edition, Home Premium Edition, Professional Edition, Small Business Edition, Enterprise Edition, and Ultimate Edition. You just get Ubuntu, thats my point, same for Debian and Slackware etc. :)

That article seems to suggest that the different versions should be renamed to...

Ultimate Edition -> "We want you to pay a lot for the full version" Edition.

Home Premium Edition -> "Pay premium rate - Get a stripped down product" Edition.

Home Basic Edition -> "Be cheap - Discover how little we like cheap people" Edition.

Starter Edition -> "Haha newbie you just paid for a demo version!" Edition.

Enterprise Edition -> "For Microsoft's big bussiness friends - All the toys a modern monopoly needs" Edition.

Small Business Edition -> "Smaller toys for smaller boys" Edition.

Professional Edition -> "Try to get away cheap - Get not even the small toys" Edition.

Ubuntu. Kubuntu. Edubuntu. Gnoppix. Guadalinex.

The difference, of course, is that in Linux, users can make the version they *want* rather than be sold a version they might not need.

Ooo. That is nasty. It is actually more like saying Ubuntu is Debian, Desktop edition.

The point I'm trying to make is Windows has many different seperate and exclusive versions where you can't change from one to the other unless you buy another version. Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu can all me freely interchangable (AFAIK) by using apt so they are not exclusive, that are all part of the same distribution which is Ubuntu.

I'm probably not making myself very clear and I you may not agree with my views here. If this is the case then I agree to disagree :)

Not to mention the windows versions are basically the same thing, just less and less crippled.

How about how many versions of Ubuntu it takes?

Lessee here... Ubuntu i386, AMD64, PPC (in both Install and Live versions), Kubuntu i386, AMD64 and PPC (once again, in both Live and Install), and now Edubuntu i386, AMD64 and PPC, once again in both Install and Live versions.

I count 18.

Your ball.

Will there be 64 bit versions of each of the vistas as well (bringing it up to 14)?

It takes 99 linux's to test the lightbulb, and Ubuntu, ultimately, to screw it in.
