I've decided I am going to put a 64 bit version of Ubuntu Gusty on my monstrous gaming computer. Here's the specs:

Processor: Intel Core2 Extreme processor QX9650
RAM: 4GB DDR2 800MHz
Storage: SCSI 15,000 RPM 300 GB (x2)
Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Gamer Pro
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX
CD/DVD Drives: Plextor PX-800A (x2)
Water Cooling System
NetworkCard: Intel Pro/1000 GT :)

If I get this to run, imagine how fast it will be!

If you have any suggestions, please post.

I think that's environmentally unfriendly. I'll send you my address so you can ship it to me for disposal...........I'll pay the shipping just to show you I'm really a nice guy.

You can`t play Crysis on that machine on high settings on DX10 anyway yet (DX10 is the same as DX9 if you cheat a little, anyways)...

It would be cool to play Duke3D on that machine, though...

I can play Crysis on high on my machine without any problems. Super high no, but high isn't a problem and my pc is slightly slower

By slightly slower you mean extremely slower, right? :D

I hope it will work on my machine, too...
I don`t have a 8800 GPU, only a 8500 with 256 MB, it should work, though, once downloaded...:)
I can`t wait to see the flies flying over my head in the moist jungle...

8500, hmm, good luck. I had a 8600GTS and it sucked. The 8800GT is so much faster.

No, not really

I'm sorry, but your 3800+ doesn't even compare with one of the E6XXX series, let alone a QX9650.
4GB vs 2GB...
8800GTX vs 8800GT

I think it's considerably more than "slightly".

Actually 2 vs 4gb isn't too much of a problem if what you are using isn't filling it, and secondly the 8800GT is almost as fast as the 8800GTX, have you not seen the benchmarks?

The first GPU i bought was a Geforce 1 that costed about 500 $ at the time (somewhere around 2000 AD), and now I have a legitimate DX10 card (8500GT). I`m not quite sure what DX10 stands for, because Ive seen that people have cheated Crysis to display the same effects from DX10 in the DX9 version of the game in XP (possibly even in wine, not sure)...

It's true, you can enable super high on Windows XP even though it shouldn't be possible. I haven't done it yet, but hmm, let me give it a try right now.

I have a desktop (although I only really use my laptop) with an AMD 6000+, 4GB RAM, NVidia 8600GT and Crysis is fine on medium to low settings at 1440x900. My laptop (spec in my signature) struggles even on all lowest at 1280x800!

To compare, though, FarCry works fine on both of my machine all on highest settings.

crysis runs fine on medium on my computer too ((see sig)) but i like the original idea, i think with the new version of ubuntu with flash and everything easy to install on x64 its better to use it now then x86 if your computer supports it. theres no more real dividing line

Can you actually do that? I thought that the Ubuntu 64bit was for AMD64bit architecture only?]

It runs fine on Intel to. I think AMD was just the first 64bit architecture to get implemented, and for some reason the name just stuck even though others are also supported now.

x86-64 is a 64-bit superset of the x86 instruction set architecture. The x86-64 instruction set natively supports Intel's x86 and was designed by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), who have since renamed it AMD64.

I don`t really care if Crysis runs for you, guys...
Crysis won˙t run on everybodys machine, anyways...
It will run in everybodys mind when the aliens take over the world...
But until then, regular people will play games like pacman, duke3d and sudoku...

uh good luck mate.

You are not going to like it. Flash9 is not supported on ubuntu64. Hence you need to spend 30mins trying to figure out how to work it out.

The X-fi drivers are a pain in the *** to work with. I spent 2 hours following step by step instructions on these boards and yet i still have no sound.

You cannot really game with ubuntu anyway so i am not sure why you want to limit that system by putting linux OS .

holy cow, 2x 300GB 15k scsi drives, probably cost as much as the rest of the system, lol.
