December 21, 2007 (Computerworld) -- At the upcoming CES conference in Las Vegas, one company plans to demonstrate the ability to store half a terabyte of data on a DVD disc that is made of a polymer similar to Plexiglas.

Israel-based Mempile Inc. said its TeraDisc DVDs will offer 1TB of storage for consumers in the next few years -- and corporations will be able to use the technology to permanently store data at a fraction of the price of spinning disk and tape, according to Dr. Beth Erez, Mempile's chief marketing officer. Today's high-definition DVDs hold a maximum of 50GB in formats such as HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.....

Is it rw-able? I would never be able to use that much space in one go.

Use it for high def tv. How 2000" screen with high def pixels size sound?

Wow, if I had one of those, I wouldn't be able to use all that space (I haven't been able to max out my 320GB HD yet!).

You don't have a lot of video then.

Actually, I don't, since I don't have a need for it.

I'd be curious to know its write speeds and its estimated shelf life.

a.k.a. I want to see something like this get RID of tape as an archival media once and for all.

Tape is to old we need to just print the binary on paper and store it in a vacuum vault.

I remember only a few years ago having a 17-20MB hard disk and wondering if I was ever going to run out of space! 17-20MB now will barely do anyone any good! TB will be like MB's in the next few years.

We have recently installed a 48TB backup system for one of our customers. Do you know how heavy all those hd's are...
