~/.Xdefaults is a file containing settings for programs used in X (your graphical user interface). If you're a fan of Gnome or KDE you'll probably not care about xdefaults too much, since they both have other ways of letting the user configure their programs.
But if you're a fan of lighter stuff like OpenBox etc. you'll certainly find it useful.

killall xterm

followed by Alt-F2 yeahconsole
