View Full Version : Hoary Hedgehog / Warty Warthog? What's that?

Can someone tell me which is the appropriate forum to post support queries - I have no idea what Hoary Hedgehog or Warty Warthog is - is it just comic names for general support?
My query is regarding the live cd, which gives the following message:
'You passed an undefined mode number. Press [RETURN] to see video modes available, press [SPACE] to continue, or wait 30 secs.'
I tried all three - in the case of the first option, I tried entering various numbers to see if the live cd would progress further, but in all cases the last command is 'starting x11' but nothing happens.
Any suggestions please? My obvious concern is that if I can't even get the live cd to work - I probably won't be successful in installing the ubuntu linux distribution.
Thanks in advance

what version of Ubuntu are you trying to run? 4.10 is Warty Warthog. 5.04 is Hoary Hedgehog.
also, what kind of hardware are you running on? the more detailed info you can provide, the more likely someone on the forums will be able to help ;-)

From your post it seems like you are very new to Linux. To answer your question as to what forum you should post regarding support querries, I would suggest to do it on the Absolute Beginner Community. This is where I post with all my questions (whether hardware [problems with devices] or software [apps that doesn't run well]).
As for your LiveCd, try typing "expert" once it is on the options menu.
EDIT: Forgot to say that when you choose expert, just press "n" on the choices for configuring your mouse, keyboard and xorg so that you can just have a feel of the livecd.

[-X Infact I'm not a total linux newbie, but I'm no expert that's for sure, get lost beyond the GUI.
Played with SuSE 7 for a while - bought it for £60 no less.
Came by Ubuntu - it's 4.10, thanks for clarifying the diff versions.
Happy to post in Absolute Beginners forum.
This is my last gasp attempt to convince myself that Linux really is worth investing more time in.
Recently just bought BSD to road-trial.
Ain't no unix head either.
Trouble is - like most, I don't like Microsoft solutions very much, since they're targetted for attack, but the alternatives just ain't that friendly yet. Drive support seems to be the main issue.
Will try your tips for the live CD.
Should probably get the later version I guess. :)
Dave B - Linuxwannabee ... BSD gonna be?
