While i was on Windows i use to brag, "i haven't had a virus in a little over a year," i find this funny and true, with linux users they brag about of course their uptime, i just wanted to share this funny thought

P.S. my largest uptime is about a week :/

Windows users brag about uptime too. I forgot my Windows XP record, but I knew a guy that had his Windows 2000 laptop on for 4 months straight.

My Linux uptime record is about 6 weeks.

Mine is actually quite long. When I first had Ubuntu, I didn't do anything risky, so I didn't do anything to screw up my system, thus It was about 1 month. but now it's about 3 times a month. I have learned enough stuff to screw everything up :D

Just shy of 63 days, and then I had to reboot in order to patch a kernel vulnerability. That's nothing, though: many GNU/Linux servers stay on for more than a year without ever rebooting. The only real limits to uptime on a well-configured system are kernel patches and power outages. And, of course, biodegradation, eventually.

In my case, it's a server. The only other reason would be to slightly prolong hard drive life.

pbook is a g4 powerbook. Normally it's asleep unless I'm using it. Tiger 10.4.7 is pretty solid. The 209 day machine is a Dapper 6.06.1 with about hundred and fifty overdue updates. It's running a church music server and a Desktop environment for processing recorded music.

had a redhat pc up 24x7 for over 3 years at work, was working perfectly when we decommissioned it (management said we had to use windows). as for viruses, i've been windows-free and virus-free for just over 7 years.

Longest Windows continuous uptime: 3.5 months; had to install SP2. I think since SP2 the highest continual uptime I've had is maybe 3 weeks?

Longest Linux uptime: 5~6 days, haven't had a need to keep it on long.

I shut down every night just to save power. Think about it, it's like running 4+ light bulbs constantly (We have 4 computers, too. SO thats like running about 16 full on). I am the one that has taken to conserving our power since we have such high costs.

Wait till this bill, although it will be fairly high (With the Christmas lights, etc.) it will be much lower than expected b/c I shut everything down at night.

That's why suspend to ram is so important to me. I *refuse* to use any linux distro that doesn't do that on my computers. Granted, modern notebooks doesn't really consume *that* much power, but it's even more important with a notebook because it has a limited power supply (if you run it unplugged, obviously)

My longest uptime is 82 days 18 hours. I got curious with the graphics, and botched it all up. Fixed the issue and had to [sudo shutdown -r now]. Dang it.

Also why does my uptime show 3 users? Two terminal and the GUI?

Before I switched to linux, my 10+ years using Windows, I've never gotten a virus. I've gotten spyware and trojans, but never a virus.

I had pretty good uptime on my server (3/4 months) but had to reboot to take the floppy drive out to put it in a different computer. I am always breaking my desktop so its uptime is 1hr 29minutes and i am about to attempt to compile my own kernel for the first time so i will reboot soon.

i like having mine on all the time so i can have instant access, to it, i reboot usually every 3 days but that means my system doesnt get too much rest, only when i'm away from my house for like a vacation then i dont see any reason for it to be on

My laptop, well uptime is pretty irrelevant on a laptop.

you know, my home desktop hasn't actually powered down for over 4 months now - I last did that when I went away for a week.
However, it has been rebooted a couple of times. The last time was a highly unusual hard system lock caused by iceweasel consuming ALL CPU runtime and bash not responding due to the CPU being consumed.

Current uptime is now 9 days; before the last soft reboot, it had been up for 43 days.
I have also been monitoring it's power consumption - my system runs in cool'n'quiet most of the time, so the CPU fan is switched off when not loaded, and my system consumes the equivalent of leaving a single bulb on in the house.
